Meet Sharanda Wilburn of SAW in Decatur

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sharanda Wilburn.

Sharanda, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I began drawing at the age of eight. I continued to sketch as I got older but I did not take any art classes until my Junior year in high school. That is when I started to learning about different artists. Years later I got my Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts Media Arts & Animation from The Art Institute of Atlanta.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
On September 3, 2004, my mother passed away, I was 20 years old. I remember the last conversations & laughs we had. The days before she took her last breath I remember the look she had on her face when she looked at me. That’s why I became a portrait artist. I can use my artistic skill to mimic an expression whether if it’s sad, excitement, etc. Painting is very therapeutic for me, it is my way out when thinking of my mother.

Please tell us about SAW.
My artist name is SAW. My name is Sharanda A Wilburn. I paint a lot of portraits, customized shoes & do art parties known as Create A Canvas. I am known for painting portraits of The Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, Stacey Abrams, and CBS 46 News anchorwoman Amanda Davis. I am proud of myself to be able to take a tragic moment in my life by losing my mother and turning it into something positive & love what I do.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My Grandmother, she always gives me encouragement, aunt Shekeela, she’s always have my back when dealing with bigger clients, my uncle Anthinius he always buying me art supplies. My bestfriend Vassia for guiding me to think outside the box with my art. Tamika Waymon for helping me with brainstorming art ideas & titling my art party brand. My other family and friends who come to upcoming art show to show support & last but not least MY JIGSAWS! They are my fans they share & tag my work on social media. Thank you so much guys!
