Today we’d like to introduce you to SheQuita Bennett.
Thanks for sharing your story with us SheQuita. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am 32 years old born and raised in Memphis, TN. I’ve been in the beauty industry for about 12 years. I gained interest in styling hair when I was in middle school. My stepsister took cosmetology in high school so when she’d come home I would always play in her mannequins hair. I didn’t like how my mom combed my hair so when she’d comb my hair for school I would take it down and do it the way I wanted it lol. She’d get mad and eventually she just stopped doing my hair! I was on my own lol!
I started cosmetology in high school. I did my close friends and family hair all the time. A year after graduation, I had my first child at 19 and enrolled into beauty school when she turned one years old. During my time in school, I became pregnant again so you know it was a struggle trying to continue school and work a part-time job while raising two young daughters. I couldn’t give up. No matter what happened in my life, I was determined to become a licensed cosmetologist. I finished school in 2010 and became licensed a few years later. I always believed that I was born to be an entrepreneur because of the talents I have. I never liked working for other people. Doing hair always made me happy. Working in salons didn’t really work out for me because of various reasons and I wanted my own vibe with my clients. My clients would come to my house to get their hair done and even when they couldn’t come to me I would travel to them. Late nights and early mornings. I didn’t care! I just wanted to do hair.
My dream was to be a salon owner and become a celebrity hairstylist. Atlanta was the only place I wanted to move to since I grew an interest in hair because I think it’s one of the best states for hairstylists and it wasn’t too far from home. I felt stuck in my hometown and couldn’t see any growth. In 2017, moving to Atlanta was the hardest transition of my life but I don’t regret it. I started my brand SHEsewAddicted Hair&Wigs, starting completely over in a new city with new clientele. In 2018 I got my first opportunity to work on-set styling models hair for a fashion magazine company “CREAM Magazine“ and the celebrity guests for the covers of their magazine. Although I am not a salon owner yet, I know it’s going to happen soon along with many other projects I’m working on. My vision is slowly becoming reality in God’s timing as I continue to walk in my purpose. I’m blessed!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Not at all. It’s definitely been rough for me. Dealing with stressful problems mentally and physically in my life caused me to lose myself and my motivation to continue this journey. I became insecure in my work thinking I wasn’t good enough. I was homeless for a while when I moved to Atlanta. I lost everything I had. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to continue to do hair because it was getting harder and harder but I overcame it. Funny thing is, every time I wanted to give up on doing hair or felt down about it, God sent me a client or some type of opportunity that involved hair!! So I knew I couldn’t give up. Everything happens for a reason. It was lessons I needed to learn that made me stronger and wiser. I had to increase my faith and keep going.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with SHEsewAddicted Hair&Wigs – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
SHEsewAddicted Hair&Wigs is the name of my business. I specialize in custom wigs, handmade and by sewing machine. My wigs come in 2 options: Clients can BYOB (bring your own bundles) to get a wig made with their previous used/new hair or I can provide the hair and create the wig. All wigs come “Ready To Wear” pre-styled so clients really won’t have to do anything to it but put it on! I offer a variety of other different services such as sew-ins, crochet styles, loc styles, quickweaves, and more. I also offer editorial hairstyling for photography, tv/video shoots, fashion shoots etc. I’m most proud of my growth and the recognition my brand has been receiving through the opportunities that has been coming my way. I think what sets me apart from others is my customer service. I’m very professional and honest with my clients at all times while keeping them happy.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
In the near future, I will be in a private salon suite to give my clients a vibe they’ll love. I’m completing my wig collection for its first launch and I’ll have a product line soon. When I started doing editorial I fell in love with working on set so I will continue to do so whenever I get the opportunity. I’m also a wine lover so I’ll be learning more about the wine industry! I have a few surprise projects up my sleeve lol! It’s Coming Soon!!!!
