Today we’d like to introduce you to Sherry Murray.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Lucille & Grace was years in the making, partially due to my insatiable love of cookies. I love cookies and this affair was only deepened when I was about 7 years old. My grandmother Lucille, taught me how to make one cookie, Southern Tea Cakes. But, under her watchful eye, she let me mix and match ingredients recreating that one recipe into many different types of cookies based on whatever ingredients we had in the kitchen at the time. I’m sure if I had written them all down, I would have had my very own cook book by the time I was 9.
Time passed and I grew up. I went to college, graduated, worked, went to college again, graduated and worked some more. But one day, it was not my love of cookies that called me back to the kitchen but this fascination with cakes. I took baking classes offered during workshops at a local art school and even signed up for Wilton’s decorating classes at a local craft store. I baked cakes every chance I got, birthdays, holidays, Mondays and Thursdays. So, on a Sunday morning, after much patience gained and skill learned, Lucille & Grace transitioned from a hobby to a home-based business.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Yes and no. Administratively, yes it was smooth sailing. However, I have to tell you I have baked some ugly cakes. If you recall, I loved cookies and they were what I had been baking since forever. However, cakes were not my thing. Most of the cakes I tried to make in my formative days literally fell apart. I can remember eating delicious cake out of cups, because they would never stay together. If one recipe was good for cupcakes, it certainly wasn’t good for a cake. I can remember one of my first cake orders, the cake was so bad, that I swore I would never bake again. So hurt and embarrassed, I turned away from my dream of cute cake, back to cookies. But then one day, out of nowhere came this urge to bake a cake and I have never looked back.
So now, Lucille & Grace is at a crossroads. We are looking at the now and deciding on rather or not and when Lucille & Grace will expand from a home-based business to a store front location. We are also looking to expand our mail order cookie service.
Please tell us about Lucille & Grace.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have started sooner versus later. I say this because the only obstacle for me was myself in that, I almost let the fear of failure stop me from fulfilling a lifelong dream.
