Meet Shyriah Marshall and Germaine Pentsil of The New Kids in Detroit

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shyriah Marshall and Germaine Pentsil.

Shyriah and Germaine, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
We started out as best friends with the same idea of encouraging others to start their own businesses, brands, etc. We both already had our own consulting businesses and were working on building our brands. Initially, we wanted to start a social club for like-minded individuals, however, we decided that a podcast was a better idea for us. We decided to hit the ground running with interviewing some of Detroit’s most popular entrepreneurs, encouraging them to share their stories with our listeners. In addition to the podcast, we host various events including our Brunch and Budget Series, which includes food, networking, and valuable lessons such as budgeting, makeup, etc. all at a reasonable cost for our guests.

Has it been a smooth road?
For The New Kids, the road has been very interesting. One of our biggest struggles was in the beginning, we did not have a place to record so we had to make do with what we had. This meant recording in public places, hoping that others would keep the noise down. Also, when we started, neither of us knew much about podcasting, we just knew we wanted others to know what we wish we had known when we started our businesses. We found it easiest to figure out what each of us are good at and work to our strengths. Since we are best friends, it makes it so much easier to work with one another. The important thing is that through our rough moments, we did not lose sight of the vision that we have set for ourselves.

The New Kids – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
The New Kids is a millennial collective of two Detroit women encouraging others to make “it” happen. We specialize in podcasting, which is what we are most known for. We use podcasting to share our knowledge with others across the world. As a company, we are most proud of the feedback that we have received from our listeners, especially if we have helped encourage them to explore entrepreneurship. What sets us apart from others is that we are sharing what is real about owning businesses, not just the good parts. We interview entrepreneurs that do not have the typical business story. We give entrepreneurs in the city the chance to share their products/services as well as build partnerships through networking opportunities.

In addition to blogging, we have two major series including Brunch and Budgets and The New Kids University where we share lessons that we learned with everyone else. These segments have helped us grow our brand and spread positivity in our community.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Absolutely! In today’s time podcasting has become so popular and opened up the doors for many businesses and people. For someone who is just starting out, we would recommend starting here. Detroit is made up of so many creatives and it is important that we work together and build each other up.
