Today we’d like to introduce you to Sierra Hall.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Sierra. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I became interested in creating videos while I was in middle school and it really has been a staple in my life ever since. Luckily, I became interested in content creation right as the popularity of YouTube Vloggers skyrocketed around 2011, so I had a lot of people that I could look up to for inspiration. Throughout my later teen years, I developed my niche and began doing freelance gigs, which were mostly weddings and graduations at the time. The early work is definitely embarrassing to watch sometimes, but it is fun to be able to look back and see how much my individual style and workflow has evolved. When it came time to get serious about a career path, I had already been developing a marketable skill for years, so film and video creation was a natural choice for me. A lot of young people can struggle with finding their way after high school, so I feel very fortunate that I had a sort of tunnel vision at the time of what I really wanted to be doing.
Has it been a smooth road?
Rarely is there any road that is smooth, especially in Atlanta! There have been plenty of highs and lows, some of which can make one question if this is even the right path to be on. Working in a creative field is always challenging because it moves quickly and there is not a “cookie-cutter” method to becoming successful. It takes a lot of work and devotion to be a lifetime student willing to keep up with the craft. The experience of sitting with an audience that is enjoying something that was once just a collection of ideas in your head, that makes it worth it.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am a freelance documentary filmmaker, so I mostly focus on my own projects. I also enjoy working with nonprofits and have been fortunate enough to partner with and create alongside some local nonprofits in the past couple of years, which is always an incredible experience. I would say what sets me apart as a documentary filmmaker would be the willingness I have to completely dive into a niche subject. I love being able to learn so much about something and work to convey that information in a shortened and entertaining version so that others can maybe discover they have an interest in the same area or at least learn something about it.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Georgia, as a whole is a great place for emerging artists of all kinds. With filmmaking, it’s perfect because the industry is booming and the cost of living is low compared to other places that creators can thrive in. There’s a great community of filmmakers in Atlanta that are easy to network with, so it’s the ideal place to be, in my opinion.
