Today we’d like to introduce you to Skye Parker.
Skye, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been singing since I could talk! I remember always having a studio at home. Being that my dad was a rapper back in the day! He would have my older brother and I going back and forth free styling. Which started the creativity to make songs of my own. I participated in my first ever talent show, in the first grade. It was nerve wrecking but yet an exciting experience. At a young age I felt so in my element when performing in front of people. At that time in my life I was very active with creative extracurricular activities, such as ballet, piano and vocal lessons, while singing songs in a garage, school & church.
All these activities my parents made sure I took part in, definitely play a role in who and where I am today as a singer! I’ve always had so much love for music. Admiring people such as Sade, Alicia Keys, Fantasia, etc., only in the fifth grade. It was like preparation for my future. I would say I was blessed with the gift of these natural talents I have. Leaving me to feel born for a certain lifestyle, following this dream.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As with all things we deal with in life, ups and downs always are a part of those things. Nothing is easy, but giving up is. That’s something I almost wanted to do but could never even follow through with it. My dad has always been such a big supporter of me, as well as my mom. They always stayed onto me about pushing through, not for perfection but for perseverance.
As a perfectionist, that was something big I had to learn. Everything will not happen exactly the way I want it to, but that doesn’t mean it won’t happen. Also, I had to realize no one is perfect. I had to look within and heal those insecurities that flowed everywhere inside of me. Self-love really is one of the major keys to success. I had to gain true and complete confidence, so I would say that was my main struggle on this journey.
We’d love to hear more about your music.
I am a singer and a song writer. I plan to take part in acting, dancing and modeling too! I’ve already slowly started to enter those lanes with visuals for my music and also with the conceptual photo shoots I love to do! I adore being creative. Art is truly my escape from this world I share with other people.
I’m mostly proud of the way I have grown as a person then as an artist. I no longer box myself in, instead I embrace being the box. It took a while to appreciate the diversity in my style and sound. Now I’m happy because I’m confident in all that I am. Unlike most, especially around my age, people still find themselves following what’s in and what’s not. Rather than what’s for them.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I believe in blessings more than luck. For me things don’t happen by chance but by God. That being said, God has always blessed me with so much. External but most importantly internally. He allowed so much strength to flow through me these past years of my life. The mind is powerful; it takes a lot to fight the negative thoughts and feelings that prey on it. It’s not easy to get through alone. At one point I felt like I was in a hole and had no way out, but God kept pushing me. Helping me to keep it moving, so in place of luck, I was blessed with endurance.
