Meet Sophia Karatzas of Hair Dimensions in Snellville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sophia Karatzas.

Sophia, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
When I moved to Atlanta from Greece in the mid-70’s, I attended the International University of Cosmetology. I worked in several high-end salons in Atlanta and Chicago and afterward wanted to explore internationally so I moved back to Europe. I did hair in cities such as Athens, Greece, and Naples, Italy. Once I decided to settle down and have a family in the 80’s, I opened a salon in Stone Mountain and then in 1996, I opened my current salon in Snellville, GA. We’ve been here for 25 years. It’s a full-service family salon, with a waxing station and tanning beds.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No entrepreneur’s road is smooth per se, but ours has thankfully been as smooth as one could hope for. Our biggest challenge at the moment has been to find well-trained beauticians. Maybe it’s just me, but I feel like they don’t train them like they used to.

Please tell us about Hair Dimensions.
We are a full-service salon. This means that we do everything from perms and foils to the modern man’s haircut. We specialize in color correction, perms, and updos. There have been hundreds of people over the years that have come to us with a color gone bad, or looking for someone that actually still knows how to do a perm; I guess the 80’s gave us good experience in these areas. I’m most proud of our precision haircuts. I have customers that move to different areas of Georgia and keep coming back. A few have even moved to North Carolina and save their hair appointments for when they come to town to visit family; another is in Florida. It doesn’t worry me when people say they are moving. I can’t even count how many remember me from even before I had children. Our following is very strong.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I could go back and do things differently, I would have stayed within the perimeter of Atlanta. Our salon is a big, beautiful representation of years of hard work, and we are quite attached to it now. The idea of moving and leaving it behind is scary. However, being in the city’s suburbs has allowed us to keep our prices competitive.

Been going to Sophie for years. She is the BEST at both color and cut. Give this salon a try-she will make you beautiful.

Sophia is the best. I have very fine thin hair and she works miracles. I have been going to Hair Dimensions for over 14 years.

I must be the one in Florida she was talking about. Whenever I’m in the Snellville area always go back to see Sophia. She got me out of a mess from having a perm and color burned and got my hair straightened out and I love her dearly.
