Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Otey.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Stephanie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have always had a passion for organizing and decorating parties. I started out by decorating and organizing events for friends and family members. In 2017 a very close friend of mine was getting married and she asked me to be her planner. For a year, we planned her wedding and Fall of 2017, I organized and decorated my first wedding and reception. After the wedding, many people who saw the pictures encouraged me to go into event planning and decor. I sat with the idea for months questioning my abilities and questioning whether or not I could actually be successful. During that time of wondering and self-doubt, I still continued to assist people with ideas and planning of their parties. One day it just hit me, I can do this! I can be successful, I can be a business owner and I will make a difference while doing it. I prayed and then decided to step into my space and hit the ground running. In January 2019, I decided to open myself to the public and start on my new path fully. No more self-doubt, no more questioning self! I can and I will is my motto.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Business itself has been an absolute delight! Of course, you learn as you go and there have been several instances of learning hard lessons fast, but I have yet to meet a business owner who has not learned those same lessons. On a personal note, after being told in 2015 that I wouldn’t work again, and enduring a big back surgery, part of my self-doubt came from hearing you can’t from doctors and nurses. However, I have never been good at being told I can’t do something and I pushed right through everything they said I couldn’t. Even though I may not be able to do things as quickly or painlessly as others, I can still get it done, and I prove that with every event I do.
Please tell us about Step’s Design.
Step’s design is an event planning business. “Event design with the CLIENT in mind”. I absolutely love helping people bring their ideas to life with design. Being able to do what you love and help people celebrate some of their most memorable moments in life is a total blessing. I am grateful to all my clients that have allowed me to help them with their special events. No matter the design, I can and will create a memorable event for my clients. Many have come to me about to give up on having an event because of prices they were quoted by others! I have helped numerous people have beautiful events and not rake their savings dry in the process. I help by any means necessary for my clients. Everyone deserves dreamy weddings and big birthday parties, regardless of the budget.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over knowing what I know now, I would have started sooner and skipped the phase of self-doubt!
