Meet Steve and Joy Thomas-Hunt of Greenway Farms of Georgia in Roberta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve and Joy Thomas-Hunt.

Steve and Joy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
We were both widowed, living in Cobb County when we met in 2013. While we knew were at different stages of grief, it was quickly apparent to both of us that we were a perfect fit, exactly what the other one needed. We had each enjoyed a great marriage, and shared a desire to honor our late spouses in the way we chose to live after loss.

A chance meeting in early 2015 introduced us to Kerry and Robin Dunaway, the original owners of Greenway Farms of Georgia. We were getting married in June of that year and were actively searching for a home we could share while trying to help all of our five college-age young adult kids move forward into their own lives. We hit it off immediately with Kerry and Robin, who soon asked us to become part of Greenway Farms. It took 2.5 years for us to finally have all of our moving parts in place to move

Has it been a smooth road?
Our kids and family are most important to us. It took longer than we’d imagined to get everyone settled in school and graduated, houses sold, etc. Once we were here, part of Greenway Farms, we had to hit the ground running because the learning curve was steep, and the welfare of farm animals in our care is utmost importance regardless of whatever else each day brings. We live our lives firmly grounded in our faith. We pray everyday for God to guide us to live out the purpose He created us for, and try to always be aware of the good in every day.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Greenway Farms of Georgia story. Tell us more about the business.
We are a family-owned regenerative farm, raising hormone, chemical and antibiotic beef and pork, and free-range eggs. We also have an FDA licensed canning kitchen on our farm hand-producing pickles, jellies, jams, and sauces. We sell direct to consumer at our on-farm Greenway Farms Market, as well as several farmers markets, restaurants, and specialty grocery stores.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The average consumer is becoming more aware, more educated and more involved in understanding where their food comes from and how it is raised. Our mission is for people to have access to clean, wholesome, nutrient-dense food. We strive to educate our customers on the benefits of raising animals the way we do. Our goal is for people to “Know your farmer. Know your food.”
