Today we’d like to introduce you to Sumita Dalmia Patel.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I graduated from the University of Georgia with a Business Degree and went to law school shortly after that. I practiced law at a local firm in Atlanta for a few years before taking a position with McDonald’s Corporation. I always had a passion for entrepreneurship and knew one day I wanted to own my own business. I fell in love with the Paint & Sip concept when I attended my first class a few years ago. I loved how the classes inspired people to become the best versions of themselves. I am lucky to be able to balance both my legal career and my business. I have a supportive team at work and my family is always all hands on deck at the studio.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. Balancing my legal career with my own business has its challenges. They are so different from each other but that is what makes it fun. During the day, I review contracts and at night, I am playing games with our guests on stage at an art studio! The corporate environment is very different and owning your own business is definitely a 24/7 job. It has been challenging to find a groove that works just right. Managing a large team of my own is new to me so it has been challenging but rewarding at the same time.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Painting with a Twist Alpharetta – what should we know?
Painting with a Twist is an art studio where guests are able to create their own masterpiece, enjoy a cocktail and let their creative juices start flowing in a fun environment without needing any prior experience. We often joke that this is “fun art”, not “fine art!”. We are a great option for ladies night, date night, birthday parties and corporate events!
What I love the most about our company is our give back component. Once a month, we host a “Painting with a Purpose” class — we donate 50% of the proceeds to a non-profit organization in our community. The best part of owning your own business is the ability to support and give back to those around you.
I think what sets us apart as a company is our art. We have close to 400 locations around the nation, each with an amazing staff of artists that are constantly creating unique and new pieces of art. We are lucky to have these talented individuals in our system.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think honesty and kindness are two of the most important keys to success. Both your team and your guests have to be able to trust you. Often our guests are coming to the studio in order to escape the hectic demands of life, so a gentle smile can go a long way for someone that may be having a tough day.
