My story started off like most stories. I was born and raised in St. Catherine, Jamaica by two parents that did the best they knew how to do at the time. There was a large period of my childhood that they were not present, so my siblings and I spent a lot of time being raised by other members of the family. Growing up in a third world country, the situations weren’t always ideal but we made the best of it.
Some of my fondest memories were watching my grandmother making and packaging soap powder, peanut cake and an array of items to sell to the neighbors. She and my grandfather were entrepreneurs in their own right before the term entrepreneur was even coined.
My grandmother was an amazing woman, who because of the era she grew up in, could not read and had no formal education, but even still, she had the highest respect and love from the people in our community. Everybody that knew her loved her for her kindness and wisdom. She taught me many lessons that I still live by today and even teach my children. Infact it was her lesson on the medicinal benefits of using natural herbs and oils that inspired me to find my ingredients when I started my hair care line.
Growing up in a Jamaican household, I rarely saw traditional medicine being used for anything. Honestly, most ailments were treated with a specific herb or “bush” as its called in the Jamaican community. Plants and herbs such as Aloe Vera aka Synkle Bible, Cerasee, Rosemery, mint leaves, dandelion, and Fever Grass were all staples in my households. So, when I went searching for ingredients for my product line, I knew exactly where to start!
How My Brand Started
My brand was birthed at one of the lowest points in my life. At 25 years old, I found myself divorced, unemployed, no degree and a single mother of four children. But life has a funny way of revealing itself so brilliantly in the middle of a crisis. I started posting craigslist ads and doing hair in my living room to pay bills and keep the light on. It was at that point that I realized that most women were transitioning back to natural and were having a tough time figuring out how to care for their hair. So, I started researching and using my knowledge of herbs until I came up with the perfect blend of ingredients that added moisture and repair both the hair and scalp, which resulted in MAJOR hair growth. My formula worked so great that my clients started to spread the word and encouraging me to sell it. At the time, I had no experience in starting a business, and most importantly, I had no money. But what I did have was faith and my determination to create a better life for my four children. And the way I saw it, I had nothing to lose. So, I guess the rest is history.
About The Brand
Our very first product was our hair butter. A shea butter base infused with a mixture of essential oils and plant-based ingredients. We since then have expanded to over 25 different products that are beneficial for textured hair and melanated skin. Our products are created for women of color and are made with ingredients you can actually pronounce and trust. Fro Butter Haircare line is a custom blend to solve anyone’s hair troubles. Our customers love us because we understand those hair products should not be a one size fit all. The truth is that not all oils work for everyone, and I decided to cut through the industry noise and design a haircare line with options made especially for you!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There has been a few struggles along the way, although I myself would probably call them lessons because they taught me what not to do. One of the biggest lessons so far has been to hire someone to keep up with your bookkeeping. Managing finances and tracking your expenses can sometimes be the last thing on a new entrepreneurs mind, however, when it comes to providing analytics to apply for a business loan or commercial lease, your company profit and loss data becomes very necessary. If your company is not financially capable to outsource bookkeeping, then a software such as Quicken Books will do just fine.

What were you like growing up?
As a child, I was an introvert. I spent a lot of time inside my head and feeling a bit misunderstood by the adults in my life. Among my peers, I never quite felt like I fit, I guess most would call me a bit socially awkward, however, once I felt comfortable with someone I was like a social butterfly. I wrote poetry and climbed trees and spent a lot of my time observing the behaviors of those around me.
