Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamell Bailey.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Tamell. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
“I was born by the river in a little tent…” just kidding. However, I was born in Queens, New York, and relocated to South Carolina at a very young age. As a child, I was a member of the church choir where my initial love of performing started. Throughout middle and high school, I was also performing as a member of the school chorus and drama club. It was during my sophomore year in high school that I would begin writing and producing music although I had found a love for writing poetry in elementary school. My initial introduction to music production and making beats was a laborious one. I only had a drum sample program on the computer, and had to play the keyboard throughout the entire song to record on cassette tape in one take! My senior year of high school was when I would have my first official successful performances as a hip hop artist and solo singer.
Plato has said that “necessity is the mother of invention.” Most of the skills I have picked up over the years were born out of necessity. I have developed audio engineering, graphic design, video editing, artist development, music marketing, event planning, and songwriting skills in addition to audio production and performing as the President of SMS Entertainment. These things had to be done for us to reach various goals within the entertainment world, and we simply could not afford to outsource. This is why I had to make things happen somehow, as I have always been a great learner and enjoy acquiring new knowledge. For these reasons, my colleagues in entertainment started calling me “Mr. Can Do Everything.” I performed my first spoken-word piece at an open mic in 2007 which garnered me my first featured performance.
I am also a certified computer technician with a Master’s in Information Technology and over 15 years of experience. I dismantled and reassembled my first computer when I was 12 years old. Now I run my own personal IT Business named Tamell’s Tech Support. My IT skills go hand in hand with the ever-evolving entertainment world, as so much in entertainment depends on our technology functioning properly. Computer repair and various IT jobs have also allowed me to become familiar with many important mentors who have aided my entertainment career.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
This journey has been an arduous one. All of my life, I have suffered from various mental issues. I used to be ashamed to admit that to anyone because of negative connotations. Now I have realized that I’ve overcome great turmoil. I share my story in hopes that it will inspire someone. I missed my high school graduation because of a nervous breakdown. Lack of confidence and mental issues over the years have made it where I used to be inconsistent and would simply stop following my dreams for years at a time. I have discovered the doubt which I used to have within myself was because I would always compare my worst to the best of others. Recently, I have learned how to better care for my mental and overall health and found a drive, passion, and will to succeed, unlike anything I’ve ever experienced before. More and more people continue to express their belief in my abilities and talent which has helped me remain consistent.

The companies I run are Big Bailey, SMS Entertainment, and Tamell’s Tech Support. Big Bailey is my stage name as a spoken word and hip hop artist. I have been known to emphasize social consciousness and positivity throughout my writing. As an artist, my primary goal is to be remembered as a beacon of hope for others. I also produce instrumentals and perform audio engineering. SMS Entertainment specializes in spoken word, hip hop, and R&B music. We can help with many phases of music creation from the inception to the distribution. We write, produce, record, mix and master and distribute songs, design graphics and edit video, as well as market and promote artists and events.
Tamell’s Tech support is primarily a remote tech support company. We are known for dependable, knowledgeable service within a friendly budget. Your network is your net worth, and if we are unable to complete an IT task for you, we have a strong conglomeration of friends in the business who can assist you.
What were you like growing up?
I was always interested in the inner workings of both physical objects as well as the human brain, which is why I would end up majoring in Computer Electronics Engineering in college. I used to always take things apart and put them back together. I have always been a curious and inquisitive person. I was placed in gifted classes in elementary school which continued throughout the rest of grade school. I was usually pretty outgoing and the type of person who was interested in getting along with almost anyone. I’m have always been happy to be kind and giving; a “gentle giant.”
