Today we’d like to introduce you to Tammy Washington.
Tammy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My journey into personal development began about 8 years ago when I was in a miserable place in my life. I was unhappy at work and in my personal life, yet like most of us, I continued to put a smile on and press forward every day, as if everything was okay. I often felt like a victim, because “life kept happening to me”. No matter how hard I tried to make life different, I seemed to end up with the same results. I wanted more money, but couldn’t seem to get it. I wanted to love but was always single. I was angry with myself, thinking “I’m spiritual, smart, and in some ways successful – so why am I not happy?” Rather than make a change, I tried to be content with where I was. That is until one day I got an extreme wake up call. I was working as a sales trainer for one of the top marketing agencies in the country. I worked with clients like Sam’s Club, Nintendo, State Farm, and At&t training employees to market and sell products better.
After flying home from a very successful training, I learned that I might be let go from my position. I was confused as I had been given great reviews and had helped the agency land a new account. My manager at the time explained to me that the person I would need to work with on the new account “just didn’t like me”. Those words changed my life forever. It changed everything because I realized at that moment that I had set my life up in such a way that someone could take away my income, simply because “they didn’t like me”. I made a decision that I was going to do life differently. They say when the student is ready, the teacher will come. I was soon invited out to a 5-day personal development event and my life was never the same.
After 5 days of learning how to move from the passenger seat of my life to the driver’s seat, I walked back into the same office and demanded what I deserved. Not only was I able to keep my position, I got to work on new accounts, with better clients, and I received the raise that I requested. I was shocked that things could change so quickly in my life and I knew that everyone in the world needed to learn how to do this. I wrote and launched my first book, Nailed It!, six weeks later detailing how others could make massive changes in their lives in just a short time. I fell in love with this work and traded in my sales hat for personal development. I became a trainer for one of the top personal development companies in the world, Peak Potentials (now Success Resources).
In 2015, I launched my own personal development company designed to help people get unstuck in their lives and businesses! The first classes were all centered around business: Write Your Book in 6 Weeks or Less, Passion to Profits in 30 Days or Less, Employee to Entrepreneur, So You Want to Be a Coach, Elevate, etc. After witnessing some participants become vastly successful in my teachings, while others still struggled – I made a decision that I wanted to help my clients with the inner game of success. You can receive the best teaching in the world, but if you do not believe in yourself or have faith in your vision… it is impossible to succeed.
In the last few years, I have moved from Business development to Personal and Spiritual growth. I now host life-changing personal and spiritual growth retreats in some of the world’s most amazing destinations. Participants have said that “Life Unleashed” is a weekend you will never forget.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. When I first started my own company, I was used to simply training. I had to learn how to market and brand myself. There were many sleepless nights and many days when I cried wondering if everything was going to work out.
It is easy to get people to invest in learning how to make more money, but it can be difficult to get people to invest in changing their lives. Unfortunately, many don’t understand that changing their inner game of success, will lead to more money and success.
Please tell us about Life Unleashed.
Life Unleashed Retreats, a subsidiary of Tammy Washington Training specializes in creating a 360 approach to consciously creating the life you want to see. For years I attended personal development events, where they would not talk about God – or they spoke about God in somewhere airy-fairy way. Then I would go to a church where they would talk about God, but they weren’t teaching about the actions you need to take to make life different.
I grew up in the Church, I would teach others about God and what it meant to have a relationship to him, yet it wasn’t until I took my first personal development class that I was taught how to apply faith. Of course in my personal development class, they didn’t dare call it faith. No, they call it the law of attraction. I realized there was a gap in the market, for Christians who also want personal development. At a Life Unleashed event, you receive not only personal growth techniques but Biblical truth to help you in your life.
As a company, I am most proud of the stories I hear after the event. I hear stories of people going home and fixing relationships at work, with their managers, spouses, and family members. I’ve had people get raises after attending just an evening session. I’ve had participants say I learned things about my spouse that I never knew and has helped us to grow in our relationship since attending your event. I started my company because I wanted to change lives. I am most proud of the lives I’ve changed.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I don’t have one memory in particular, but all of my favorite memories all include big family events cookouts, Sunday dinners, even hurricane parties in South Carolina.
