Meet Tanisha Charron of Primal Instincts Cosmetics in Southwest

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tanisha Charron.

Tanisha, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My journey in makeup began my sophomore year of college at Bethune Cookman University. I had just had my son and absolutely zero income. I had to quickly figure out a way to make money while still being able to study and take care of a infant. In class I would always get compliments on my eyebrows so one day I said why not just start doing everybody eyebrows on campus. So I set up shop in my old freshman dorm and began slaying brows. I started traveling to different HBCU’s during homecoming that my friends went to and would do the girls on campus eyebrows there. By the end of my sophomore year I had decided to move back to Atlanta and go to school. While in college working on my degree in childhood education I continued to work for a cosmetic company where I gain more makeup skills and began to really enhance my craft. After finishing my degree I realized I loved doing makeup and that’s what I wanted to do fulltime. I later moved to another cosmetic company where I quickly moved up and became a manager/artist/event ambassador. Let’s say I learned all the ins and outs about the cosmetic business during my ten year position with that company! After dedicating a decade to building someone else’s company, I thought to myself, why not do it for myself. However, I was fearful of leaving a steady and consistent income but God says move he will make your move! I have fired from my job and although initially distraught after about 2 hrs., I felt a sense of peace and calm as if God had already prepared for this and on that exact day I had secured a spot, built a website and Primal Instincts Cosmetics was born!

Has it been a smooth road?
Being a makeup artist has been an exciting and yet humbling experience. I have been able to mix and mingle with some of the entertainment industry’s upper echelon. I’ve been able to do various award shows like the neighborhood awards hosted by Steve Harvey, Kimmie awards by the sheen magazine, Bronner Brothers, The natural Hair show, etc. However, everything is not always glitz and glam. The makeup industry in Atlanta can be very messy and competitive. I’ve had an artist that I’ve taught and help attempt to steal clients from me. I even had another artist on the set of Netflix put glue on my brushes! Yes, glue but I kept my cool and pulled out my spare set! Not today ma’am!

We’d love to hear more about your business.

Atlanta is a great place to come and live out your dreams. The makeup industry is slightly saturated here, but your success will be determined solely by the individual because there is still plenty of money despite the many makeup shops.
