Today we’d like to introduce you to Terry Berger.
Terry, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve been interested in photography for as long as I can remember. I started shooting on film exactly two years ago, and ever since, I’ve fallen in love with the entire process. My grandfather and namesake, Terry Shainberg, was a photographer. I inherited some of his old film cameras so I initially started experimenting with film photography with one of his cameras. In this past year, I had the opportunity to view some of his old negatives and I worked for a while to scan, organize, and save his photos digitally so they could be preserved. Getting to see many of his old photos inspired me with my own photography, and I noticed that our photography style is very similar. Now I love shooting photos of my friends and family, concerts, architecture, nature – really anything that crosses my path in my everyday life. I always carry a film camera with me, and I see my photography as a way of documenting the season of life that I’m currently living.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road has definitely been a bit bumpy along the way. I look back on some of my old photos from when I was just shooting with a point and shoot digital camera and I cringe at how bad they are! But I’m grateful that I still have those to look back on because I’m able to see how far I’ve come and how much my style has evolved and improved over time. Growing up, my friends and I loved having photoshoots and taking pictures of each other, and even now, we still do the same thing.
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
My main focus at the moment is film photography. At the moment, I post almost all of my photos on my Instagram, @viewsbyterry. I specialize in taking photos of my life and my surroundings and I love sharing my perspective from my viewfinder with the world. In the future, I hope to expand to start selling my own prints or even making a photography book. I want to continue shooting film and I would also love to start shooting more events such as parties and concerts because I’ve always loved doing that as well!
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I definitely give a lot of credit to my grandpa because I’ve gotten a lot of inspiration from him and his work. He traveled the world taking photos and I would love to do the same thing someday. And of course my mom, who has always supported and encouraged me with whatever crazy idea I have. My friends are always letting me take photos of them, and I love them for that! I love capturing genuine moments with my friends and family with my camera and being able to see the photos for the first time a couple of weeks later. I’ve met a lot of people along the way that has all been super encouraging and supportive of my work and ideas and I’m so grateful for all of them.
