Today we’d like to introduce you to Todd McKinley.
Hi Todd, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I spent almost 30 years in the medical sales arena leading teams and then organizations until 2020 when a catastrophic event occurred in his life, being laid off during COVID-19. I decided it was now or never to pursue a dream stalled many years ago. After years of this being his passion, he came to the realization that now was time to connect his talents and passion with the rest of the world. Thus, the birth of the Southern Roots Spice shop. Southern Roots is the vehicle I plan to share my love for seasoning. My hope is that we inspire you to create amazing food experiences layered with flavor and richness.
Almost three years in business, Southern Roots Spice and SRS Coffee Café has grown adding a 2nd location in October 2022. Some keys to our success have been tasking small daily goals for myself and employees. This approach relieves the burden on large customer events and requests. Continuing to educate and create new spice blends keep our current customer base happy and they share us- increasing customer reach and return orders. Getting entrenched with local newspapers and Facebook pages that are community-based -where both our shops are located. Lastly, what has really propelled us has been our customer service. We are a 5-star rated spice shop and coffee café. I am certain our efforts (mentioned above) and online local recognition lead to us winning The Best of Chamblee for 2022 in the Coffee Shop category. I was thrilled to be the recipient of this award. These milestones are helping us build a great story.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would love to say the road has been pathed with gold, but it has had its challenges. Let me first say my main challenges/obstacles continue to be what I expressed in my last interview with you all – BANDWIDTH! There’s never enough time in the day. But again, my business FOCUS is to continue to help elevate more flavor, so creating new blends has been my focus. The struggle at times goes beyond just the “spice blend” but making sure all your product market strategy is in place. For example, the spice needs a name, potential recipe card, social media announcement with photos and video and customer engagement follow-up. All these elements help make a delicious blend a success!

My business success is tied so closely to my personal success so without a doubt finding ways to grow my brand is key. But my husband, family and friends complete the circle for my life. These relationships sustain me -business success or not. During my highest highs and lowest lows without my support system, I’m alone and who wants that.
