Today we’d like to introduce you to Tony Curry.
Tony, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
For as long as I can remember, I’ve always grown up in a music environment. Some of my earliest memories fall back to being in my Dad’s studio, especially when I wasn’t supposed to be. I remember waking up in the mornings to old school music playing and going to sleep every night to the 808’s ringing through the house coming from his studio. My dad was the one who introduced me to hiphop music early on. I remember the euphoric feeling I felt when I was on his computer and heard for the first time early 50 cents, Outkast, Erykah Badu, and the Game.
My brother was the first to show interest in music and I think that’s what made me chose to follow music as well. Once he was old enough, he bought his own studio equipment and started working. At the time, I was just the nosey little brother that wondered why he couldn’t sit in on sessions and would have too much input for something I knew very little about. So, as you can imagine, I would get kicked out of the room very frequently. Haha, it was when I saw the attention my older brother was getting at the football games and the pep rallies, from the females and on his social media accounts, that’s when I knew. That’s when I knew I wanted to do music.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been everything but smooth. But I know that anything worth having isn’t going to come easy. It’s taken some time but I’ve learned to find the beauty in the struggle. Knowing that everything is temporary as long as your mind is set on something bigger. I struggled along the way with staying true to myself, and not letting my surroundings or my situation at hand alter my perspective. I think as an artist at one point, we’ve all struggled with “how we will be perceived from the outside,” but also the beauty of being the artist comes from not letting that stop you from creating.
Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I like to center myself around knowledge. The more you know, the more you GO. I think myself as an artist and as a brand has evolved in a way that reflects on the person I am to date, and that is what I’m most proud of. I enjoy doing a lot of different things. Showing versatility is an important character trait because that’s the begging of pushing your own boundaries. Transparency is what sets me apart from others. I spend a lot of my time with music, with instruments, beats and experimenting with my own vocals. Outside of music, I find interest in clothes, jewelry, watching docs, skateboarding, photography, reading and spending time with the ones who matter most to me.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
The ability to always just be myself. Be myself in the music, whether it be a solo track or remembering to do my own thing, on a feature and to be influenced. Being myself when I’m talking and interacting with people, being myself when I’m getting dressed. I know it sounds easy but a lot of the time, we are so caught up in everything that’s going on around us on a day to day basis, we can become easily influenced and forget who we really are. What’s the beauty in being you, if you’re trying to be someone else?
