Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Smith.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Growing up, I never would have thought I’d be in the Fashion Industry. I grew up always wanting to beat the boys in every sport possible. While at recess the other girls were playing with each other, you’d find me on the soccer field, usually dominating. Fast forward to the year after graduation and that’s when I begin my journey in fashion.
I was going to community college for computer science, and my mom told me I was lazy and needed a job. I found myself unsure of what I wanted to do but landed a job in retail. That job took me from Seattle to Atlanta just a few years ago.
I’ve been working in retail for 10+ years and this past year is when I decided I wanted to share my passion outside of just where I work. That’s when I began my blog!
Has it been a smooth road?
I’ve run into a few gravel roads along the way. I have an anxiety disorder and there have been a few times, I’ve allowed it to dictate my life. Once even while at work, I had a panic attack and they had to call 911. Talk about embarrassing, right?
Wrong. There is nothing to be embarrassed about. I found out through work I had six free visits to see a therapist. It was hard to build up the courage and go, but I’m so glad, I did. In just one visit, she helped me out tremendously in understanding how to deal with my anxiety. That’s when I realized I needed to face my fears head-on. It’s not easy to do and sometimes it’s incredibly scary. But I promise the reward is worth it.
Three years ago, I received a phone call asking if I would move from Seattle to Atlanta. I’d never been passed Colorado and I had no friends or family anywhere in the south. If I let the anxiety take over I never would have made the best decision of my life to move. I miss my family and friends every day, but as corny as this is about to sound… I never would have met the love of my life.
If you don’t take the risk, you’ll never know the reward.
We’d love to hear more about Style Eat Sleep Repeat.
I’ve been in personal styling for many years and it’s extremely rewarding. I love when a client says, “I would have never picked this out for myself” and they end up falling in love with it. Being a personal stylist is more than just picking out clothes though. I’ve helped many women get past the ‘trouble’ spots on their body and fall in love with who they are. That’s truly the best part.
I wanted to share this outside of just where I work so I created my blog ‘Style Eat Sleep Repeat’. It’s a journey through my life but also I focus on positive body image. You’ll see, I’m not a size 2, but rather a 10, 12. Somedays, I don’t like my body and that’s where I take how I deal with it to help others.
Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
Always stay in touch with your mentor. Even if you or they move from where you met. There is nothing better than to have someone who is honest with you and helps guide you through everything.
I’ve learned that staying in touch can be hard sometimes, but also reaching out after even years of not talking is always okay!
