Today we’d like to introduce you to Aly Jhene.
Aly, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started modeling at 17 in NY; someone had approached me to do a photo shoot and I thought, why not? After that, I just kept shooting! I eventually quit my job and became a full time traveling model. After a brief hiatus with the birth of my son and relocation, I’m now a part-time traveling model in the southeast.
Has it been a smooth road?
Modeling is difficult, it looks glamorous and fun but in reality, it’s a lot of hard work and you encounter a lot of tough situations in this industry. Height was always a big struggle for me in the NY market, being only 5’7, I was never even considered for runway until I moved to ATL. One of the biggest struggles is receiving compensation for your work, particularly runway. A lot of people think models make a lot of money when we really hardly ever get paid. Besides finding work, and compensation, another struggle is sexual harassment in this industry. In most workplaces, you can’t get away with it, in this industry it’s significantly easier to get away with. Scamming is another huge problem with this industry. The best advice I can give to new models is: be safe.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I specialize in print modeling but have quite a bit of experience in runway and promotional modeling as well. In addition to modeling, I also do hair and makeup, and I am an aspiring photographer. My photography and makeup page should be live by March; and I will be releasing my own lash line around April. I think what sets me apart from most models is how versatile I am.

So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
I do feel like women have more of an opportunity in the entertainment industry, especially modeling in particular.
