Today we’d like to introduce you to Cheryl Barnett-Lawson.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Cheryl. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Born and raised in Kingston Jamaica, I migrated to Stone Mountain Georgia from Jamaica at 16 years old. After graduating from high school at The Queen’s School in Kingston, Jamaica, I still needed some American courses to attend university in Atlanta, so I finished two more years of high school in Georgia.
Moving to Georgia, from a small island in the Caribbean, was definitely a culture shock. Everything was so different. I came from an all girls Anglican high school where we had devotion every morning, could barely wear any jewelry or make-up and wore uniforms in a much stricter culture, to a public high school where it was almost the opposite. It was definitely a transition and temporarily through the process, I lost a bit of my identity. I was still a believer, but like many teenagers, I found myself trying to remake myself in order to fit in. I grew up somewhat of a tomboy and very much into the outdoors, I definitely experienced a different culture amongst others my age upon moving here. Overall, I was just a young woman in a brand new culture, trying to find herself and transition to something new and different, at the same time.
Eventually, that roller coaster of an identity crisis ended and I transitioned into becoming who I knew I truly needed to be, who I was called to be; an influential woman of God who would use her voice to motivate and empower women and essentially all people, man, woman, young and old.
I co-own a photography, videography and event planning company alongside my husband called IMPWR Visuals and Events. I have authored and self-published my first book called Red Lipstick Revelations, which can be found on most platforms where books are sold. I also have my own podcast called Cher Speaks Life where I talk about different life topics we deal with daily and apply the word of God to help us get through them together.
I have a heart for people, I love to motivate and encourage others and can also be found every Sunday serving in this capacity at my church I attend, called Life Revolution Church. My goal is to be used in whichever way God pleases to inspire, encourage and teach people all over. I am still becoming all that it is God has called me to be and am very blessed to have been chosen for this journey. I am also married with three daughters Mariyah 14, Nylah 9, Madison 8 months and my step-son Jordan 13. I enjoy reading, writing, cooking, planning events, the beach, anything outdoors and nature. I consider myself somewhat of a free-spirit and a dreamer who loves to love on others and feel love.
Any advice for other women, particularly young women who are just starting their journey?
I would say, do not quit and don’t let your past dictate your future. Learn to let go of things that are holding you back and know that you are enough. Nothing you did disqualifies you from where you are going. Hold your head high and be a queen. The world needs you.
