Meet Trailblazer Kayla Wilson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Wilson.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
To be completely honest, I fell into makeup artistry by complete accident. I started off as a level five makeup hoarder! I would simply buy every product a youtube guru would suggest and either a. I never used it or b. used it and failed miserably. After buying enough products to fund my own personal Sephora, I came to the realization that regardless of all the expensive products I owned, the magic lies in the technique.

Eventually, I started perfecting my own makeup and using methods that achieved my signature look. After years of request from my friends and family to beat their faces, I finally gave in. The first official opportunity, I had to display my talent was for my bestie sister’s prom. After doing her makeup, people were raving about her look and suddenly I was being contacted by people all over the Metro Atlanta area. Little did I know, Killedxkay was developing before I even know what it would come to be. Since 2018, I have been booked consistently and officially established my brand.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My imposter syndrome was so real! It took a really long time for me to be confident in my work because Atlanta is home to the best of the best MUA in the game. It took a lot of positive reinforces from my friends, family, and clients but I finally got there. I had to learn that makeup artistry is about continuous evolving and perfecting my craft. For any young women struggling to feel adequate (in life or their industry), I would say it start by finding a strong support system that will motivate you and challenge you along the way. Shout out to my support system for allowing me to fail without judgment and succeed while keeping me grounded.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about KilledxKay – what should we know?
What sets KilledxKay apart from other makeup artist is that my goal as an MUA is to enhance not transform. Women are so uniquely beautiful regardless of their skin tone ethnicity and size, that I strive to highlight that with every slays. I embrace all those differences and find a specialized look that suits you and only you. With every client, I custom blend their foundations and concealers to ensure the perfect match each and every-time.

What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
Never wait for the “right time” to start something. The right time is when you make it.
