Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelsey Webb.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Being raised in the hood of Atlanta exposed me to seeing poverty, struggle, and defeat. As a young child, I knew I wanted to be successful, I just didn’t know what I was good at. But I did know two things, I liked to cook and I loved to EAT! My grandmother was always the cook of the family. We have always been close, and I would always be at her house watching her cook and bake. During the holidays, I would help her prepare cakes and I would be in awe of how many people ordered from her. When I was about 21, I realized the traditional graduate from college, and find a corporate job path wasn’t for me. I wanted MORE! I wanted to make my family proud. I worked for two well known Atlanta bakeries where I was given surface training on cake decorating, frosting types, and frosting techniques. I retained all of this information and knew that one day, I would create my own cake business. I wanted desserts that didn’t just LOOK good, but ones that tasted good also. Christmas of 2017, I decided to launch my business.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. I’ve struggled with sometimes not having the motivation to promote or market myself. I would get discouraged when I wouldn’t get many orders. I would get tired because I worked a 9-5, and still had to come home to make orders. My boyfriend, best friend, and grandmother pushed me to keep going even when I was tired. To this day, I want a food truck. You have to motivate yourself. You have to realize that all days won’t be good days. There are other people doing the same thing is you, but you MUST focus on being the best, and your work will speak for itself. You have to remain focused and SACRIFICE. Saving money, taking classes to strengthen your talent, being organized, studying your craft, writing out your goals and visions will all be things that you HAVE to do to become successful!
We’d love to hear more about Kay’s Sweet Eats.
I specialize in quality homemade desserts. I bake cakes, cupcakes, cookies, and brownies. I make vegan and gluten-free desserts also. I pride myself in knowing that my desserts are quality and made with love. So many bakeries focus more on the aesthetic and overproducing, and they forget that the items actually need to taste good! LOL For me, it’s bigger than having my own food truck or having the most Instagram followers. I want people to feel the love in my desserts! I want to show my brothers and family that perseverance can contribute to great success. I want to show other millennials that there is ALWAYS a way to be made. I want to show people that the slow and steady will win the race. My grandma taught me how to bake and I want to make sure she gets the recognition she deserves. I love what I do!
Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
Don’t be afraid to ask questions! Don’t be afraid to send that email or DM to ask about an apprenticeship. They may, or may not respond. Be PERSISTENT. Always make sure that your work is neat and documented. Make sure you have invested in yourself before expecting someone else to.
