Meet Trailblazer Nicola Mitchell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicola Mitchell.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I began my journey almost ten years ago by a dare. I was dared to share my story with the world regardless of how painful and embarrassing it may be. Dared to allow my walk and testimony show face that even though I am not perfect, vulnerable, and insecure; I possessed a beauty of story-telling and will be able to bless the masses through my pen. Preparing to release book 14, having published over 100 novels, consulting close to 600 authors and publishers on how to publish their product, ghostwriting, and now dubbing the title Founder of my non-profit Girls Who Brunch Tour, I am so happy that I stepped out on faith and challenged that dare.

When I set my mind on a task, I am determined to do it to the best of my potential. I studied mainstream authors and major publishers and used their tactics in my daily grind. I invested in myself and went on a full nationwide tour gaining exposure to industry professionals, book club members, and most importantly, potential readers. Before long, I began making best-seller lists and winning literary awards. I extended my brand and became a publisher, blogger, and speaker. I toured the country sharing with the world how to self-publish successfully and the importance of going after your dream.

Even though I was slowly becoming an expert in my field, I always made sure I gave back to the community, I have survived being raped, a teen mother, and a domestic violence survivor, so this was the community that I made sure that I gave back to through toys, books, and clothing drives. I still felt like I was lacking and told myself that one day I was going to put on an event to empower young girls I just didn’t know how to do it.

It wasn’t until I faced two tragedies back to back; losing my son at 7 months pregnant, and my Mother passing less than a month later, that I became extremely depressed, It was then when I realized how short life is, and that I needed to push forward with my plan, and thus the birth of Girls Who Brunch Tour.

When I decided to start Girls Who Brunch Tour, I had one main purpose: to cultivate, inspire, and empower girls between the ages of 9 – 17 nationwide. My intentions were to host an event in three cities a year, but God always laughs at us when we try to take control and not allow him to lead. My three-city tour turned into a 21-city tour as of date naming a few : Charleston, SC, Indianapolis, IN, Las Vegas, NV, Baltimore, MD, Jacksonville, FL, Charlotte, NC, Detroit, MI, Houston, TX, Philadelphia, PA, Columbus, GA, Richmond, VA, Atlanta, GA, and with Los Angeles, Sacramento, CA, New York, NY, New Orleans, LA, and Chicago, IL coming up. As of date, we are servicing almost 5003 girls, and still counting.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, the road was not smooth. There were always financial woes, the lack of staff and support system, and the doubt that tends to linger amongst your peers when the going gets rough. You have to believe in yourself, and force completion even when no one else is around, thinks that you should give up and let go of your dreams. Just remember only the strong survive, and that if it was meant for it be easy, everyone would be doing it.

Which women have inspired you in your life?
I have been blessed to have had so many women come into my life and bless me. My late sister Janet Smith inspired me because she was the true epitome of what hard work and determination are. As a writer, I have looked up to the greats: Zane and Mary Monroe because of how far they have gotten with their literary journey.
