Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Anderson.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have always been passionate about the arts, whether it is music and singing or painting and designing. I am a very visual person and get excited that I am able to spend my days creating. I think my story started like many other creators: It just kinda, happened. I started doing things I enjoyed and thought, “well, wouldn’t it be cool if I made money off of this, too?” I got serious about the business side once my daughter, Josselyn, was born and I found myself at home with a desperate NEED for an outlet and an income, hence the name of my company. I am currently in the midst of rebranding to better include how our family, and my design style, has changed in the past few years.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Psh! Do smooth roads exist? I think if you don’t struggle you must not be going anywhere. And honestly, I have been sitting still for a while now. It is my family and fiance that have pushed me and supported me recently to step up my game. I struggle with something most artists do, self doubt. I feel like I am not good enough, or not skilled enough or not business savvy enough. But I realized that I will never get any better until I try and fail. My mom told me once, “I never lose. I either win or I learn.” And I am taking that to heart and going forward full force in my business and designs. To the women just starting out, find people there to push you and build a community around you. Push each other to do better, push yourself to do better. It’s okay to be scared, but don’t let it stop you. You may surprise yourself.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Just Joss & Co – what should we know?
I am a graphic designer and I specialize in branding and logo design and also custom design patterns for the Atlanta based 5 Dog Designs Boutique. I am soon to add websites into my services but woah, it is so much to learn and I want to have a strong foundation before asking for a clients trust. I like that my brand is focused around family, small businesses and motherhood. I had a hard time figuring out my purpose and a way to express myself when I first got into this motherhood game, so I enjoy helping other women and families to create a brand that allows them to support their families, and yes, dog parents count! Actually, many of my clients are pet based businesses and I work in pit bull rescue so I have a special place in the Just Joss & Co family for all of my pet parents. But my life is crazy. One kid is always running around naked, another is drawing on the walls, and they are always asking for snacks. I enjoy working with families that have these same struggles and nap-time entrepreneurial spirit. I strive to make my interactions more than simply professional. I want them to feel like they’re chatting with a friend and for my clients to feel like part of the Just Joss & Co family. Brb, my son is playing in the fireplace ashes.
What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
You are going to doubt yourself and have moments where you don’t know what the f*** you are doing or thinking you will never get a client. You will, girl. Just keep on going. You can reevaluate your process but don’t you dare stop doing what you love, what you’re passionate about. Create a badass tribe of women and people around you and push each other to be the best you can be. Nothing is more inspiring than having people around you who want you to succeed and who make you feel good, and make sure you’re doing that for them, too. We need more badass girl tribes in this world, so it is up to us to fuel them.
