Meet Trailblazer Zany Dunlap

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zany Dunlap.

So, before we jump into specific questions about what you do, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have been a career paralegal for over 20 years. I started as a receptionist when I was 20 years old. I slowly learned the ins and out of a plaintiff’s law firm. I learned how to do every single job you can think of within a law firm. I started to feel unfulfilled and stagnant and left a job I have had for over 2o years. I went to another firm that is “mill” like and soon realized that it was not a good fit for me and went to a smaller boutique firm. I was approached by a colleague to assist in optimizing a law practice that wasn’t flowing in a lucrative direction, so that was the beginning of my little company.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I think the biggest struggle for me is to actually say out loud to clients that I am really good at my job because of my ability and ability alone. There is so much pressure for women to put it all in an attractive package. It doesn’t have to be that way. We can be smart and direct without being called “bossy” or “mean”.

We’d love to hear more about Plaintiff Management.
I can look at a Plaintiff’s practice and see where there is room for growth and what needs to be reorganized in a sense of utilizing existing staff in a more dynamic set up. I can train paralegals/legal assistants in a mill like firm or boutique firm. I know one other person that can assist in the set up of a plaintiff practice but I do know that I am the only person that can implement the actual work.

Which women have inspired you in your life?
I have a friend Jessyca Holland who started a non-profit, C4 that support actors in Atlanta. Jessyca was an actor and saw the need for this type of support and ran with it. And my present employer Robyn Webb. She can do anything. She takes interesting cases like Title IV, family law, employment and personal injury. She is a true feminist to me. I want to be her when I grow up.
