Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Lewis.
Tyler, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I didn’t have the dream of becoming a graphic designer at a young age. I grew up in Bankhead, Atlanta, and my only hobby was playing basketball. Throughout elementary and middle school, I began to stray away from organized sports. During that time, I began drawing on the back of my classwork after I would finish early, just to have something to do. On projects that required drawing, I would take most of my time drawing instead of actually doing the part that’s getting graded the most. Then, around my sophomore year in high school, I began doing my artwork digitally on a computer. I wasn’t planning on making income off designing until people noticed some of my work and began asking me to make them a logo or just something cool.
High school was not for me, I didn’t take it serious, for the fact that they cannot teach me anything I cannot learn on my own… The classes were pointless to me so I took it as a joke & I don’t regret anything. I wanted to own my own business, to learn about credit, housing, money management, etc… so I did on my own with my moms help and expertise. Shout out to moms. With the choice of not taking school serious, I now own my graphic design business working with clothing companies, known musicians, photographers, content creators, gaming organizations, etc. while also having the knowledge and experience of building/repairing computers and working with technology. ALL learned on MY OWN. I quit my job at Staples to take the risk of becoming a true entrepreneur. This is the current state I’m in. I am comfortable, I am happy and I am ready for all the fails and struggles of being a TRUE entrepreneur. This is how I will write my story with the help of God.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nothing is a smooth road, It doesn’t matter what you are doing. I’ve had plenty of struggles. Sometimes I may have clients all week, maybe even three weeks fully booked. Then, I’ll have no clients for two more weeks, therefore I’m not making any money, but that’s part of the game. It doesn’t bother me when I have down moments with my business because this is what I signed up for and I am fully aware of the risks and challenges.
Tyla Knows – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
With my business, I do not limit myself. This is more than graphic design because I am more than just an artist. I have no employees, nothing, it is just me. Although designing is the main focal point, I also specialize in computer engineering and repair. I’ve built more than 15 computers and repaired at least 100 plus. I am extremely knowledgeable in technology in general. I also build websites, design clothing and photo editing. I’m teaching myself more about photography because I want to start taking city and landscape photo to be framed and sold. I want to be able to do everything and profit from it. I enjoy expanding my business this way… This is what sets me apart from others. I am my company, and I am proud of myself.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Honestly, the most proudest moment is having celebrities wear the clothing I designed.
