Today we’d like to introduce you to Zyan Wynn.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
First, I will say that I am a young black man raised by one of the strongest single mothers and women that I have ever encountered. Since birth, I have been shown and taught the power of hard work, understanding your strength, and using your voice. This allowed me to continue to sharpen these skills and values throughout my life. Through the Ron Clark Academy and The McCallie School, I grew into myself. I strengthened my love for public speaking. I discovered my passion for working with children and education. I found myself. My story is not centered on me, but it is the story of how others stepped in to and recognized my talents and skills. They encouraged me. They inspired. It is because of them that I want to do the same for future generations.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a learning experience. It has been relatively smooth in the sense that I have been able to work with fantastic students and kids. Unfortunately, due to our world’s current state with the virus, I have been mainly online through Zoom, which has its benefits and deficits at the same time. It has been an adjustment learning how still to keep engaging sessions without the face to face communication. However, through connections and social media, I have had a pretty steady flow of students.
Please tell us about Wynning Education.
When Corona started to run rampant, I was approached by a mentor of mine, Aungelita Williams, and she said that I should start a tutoring company. After thinking about it, I began to think about what if I could do this, but I knew that I wanted it to be a little more than your average tutoring company, and I wanted to emphasize relationships and connections. Wynning Education offers creative and insightful peer tutoring sessions covering third to ninth grade curriculum in mathematics, social studies, and English, along with workshops focusing on public speaking and soft skills and college application and essay development.
As a Princeton Scholar, my goal is to create a new tutoring platform that allows for further curriculum enhancement, continued skill development, and newfound educational discoveries. As an organization, Wynning Education prides itself on developing and refining the speaking and thinking skills of the future leaders of our world, so that they can continue to spark the change that we NEED to see. A couple of weeks ago, we hosted an interview series about the current state of racial affairs, and we have provided a weekly interview series about various educational opportunities across the country. We are more than just tutoring; we are genuinely trying to all-encompassing because there are so many sections of education.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Whew! My favorite memory from my childhood. This is a hard one because I honestly don’t have too many memories from my earlier childhood. Most of my memories don’t go beyond middle school. However, I would say that some of my favorite memories are sitting up under the tree on Christmas morning waiting for my mother and grandmother to wake up, so I could tear open the presents. Holidays with my family have been some of the greatest highlights of my life.
