Today we’d like to introduce you to Anushua Sinha.
Hi Anushua, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’m from Mumbai, India. I’ve always enjoyed drawing and that eventually led me to architecture school. From there, I started discovering how powerful drawings can be. They helped me convey information, spread joy and even bridge language barriers! That’s when I started finding a purpose for the doodles in my sketchbook and found illustration as a career. It was like having my hobby become my superpower! Seeing Indian art styles like Madhubani, Gond, Kalamkari, etc. made me associate really bright colors with high energy and dramatic storytelling, which is why I make use of a lot of saturated colors in my work. Illustration in advertising and kid lit fascinates me the most. I’m currently finishing up my MFA in illustration at SCAD.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
For the most part, I’ve been incredibly privileged that I’ve always been allowed to follow my dreams. After five years of studying architecture and two years of working, when I decided to make the shift to illustration full-time, I found an amazingly solid support system in my parents. Being from a country where illustration is still not that big a profession, coming abroad was this huge decision mentally, emotionally and financially. Navigating through all of that has been a self-exploratory journey that continues even today.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I really enjoy advertising, both brainstorming and illustrating for it. It’s the storytelling behind a product that draws the consumer to it, and I love when art, especially mine, can become that enticing factor! Besides this, I’m super passionate about children’s literature, breaking down larger concepts into simple palatable chunks for everyone to understand. I truly believe that children’s books are for adults more than kids and have been inspired, more often than not, by them. To play a part in getting such profound moments across with simplicity is really special and I love playing a part in it!
I enjoy coloring and spend a great deal of time mixing colors and detailing things one line at a time. My super saturated palette and filled-up compositions are my signature moves when it comes to my illustrations.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
My art kept me sane during covid and people, in general, relied so heavily on all kinds of creative media. This taught me how indispensable art truly is. It brought newfound respect for what we do and this career I’ve chosen.
