Today we’d like to introduce you to Caley Cline.
Hi Caley, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
For as long as I can remember, makeup has always been a part of my life, but I never gave myself the time or day to dive deep into it. Growing up, I was in competition cheer and dance, so I quickly picked the love for makeup super young. I was your average 9, 10 years old wondering through my mother’s makeup bag. In high school, I would have a few proms here and there and would always practice on my friends when we would go out to the movies or a football game. YouTube was my go to. I always tell everyone “YouTube was my instructor”. I would sit in front of my mirror in the floor with a few products my mom would pick up from Kroger for me and practice till I was forced to go to bed. Flash forward to 2016, the year that probably started it all. I booked my very own FIRST wedding. From there on out, I didn’t book many each year, as I was still in school but I loved getting my hands on any makeup gig. Between proms, weddings, baby showers, formals, etc.! When Covid hit, I had recently lost my job and was pregnant with our first child. I knew I wanted to stay home but wanted to make income for our family as well. One of my good friends, who was a local makeup artist/photographer, messaged me around Christmas time in 2020 and asked if I could cover a wedding for her. I agreed but was beyond nervous. I fell in love with it once again. The following January I put my full trust in God and asked him to help me grow into my very own business, that way I could still have the best of both worlds, staying home with my daughter but also working. Ever since then, I have been very successful.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Starting up my own business was not easy. I started becoming successful around the beginning of Covid, so that let alone was pretty challenging. I think the hardest part of starting was all the lessons I had to learn the hard way. Between handling clients, managing contracts and quotes, learning how to work in a fast-paced environment under a ton of pressure, etc. I think another bumpy road that I had to learn how to walk down was knowing my family and I would always have different schedules. My husband works M-F and I work the weekends doing weddings, and I feel like it was really hard to adjust to that, knowing I wouldn’t get to do much with them or have plans.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a current, on-sight traveling makeup artist. I feel like my purpose (my job) is to make women feel the most beautiful they’ve ever felt on one of the best days of their life! I think what I am most proud of is how far I’ve actually come. I’ve never been the type to stick with something. I always pick something up for a short period of time, and then move on to the next most interesting thing. But with makeup, it’s never been that way. Things that make me feel the most proud is seeing a bride’s face light up after she sees the look we have altered for her special day or knowing that I’m able to give tips and tricks that women can use beyond their wedding day and carry on into their own makeup routine, that make them feel their best.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I think it’s always a good idea reaching out to someone for help. A mentor can help guide and mold you into the artist you want to be for your clients. Personally for myself, I never had a “mentor”. I learned everything on my own, but it was hard and took a very long time. If you reach out to someone, you can avoid the mistake of learning things the hard way and learn the ins and outs instead of going down unnecessary paths.
