Rising Stars: Meet Dana Lutz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dana Lutz.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My interest in weaving began when my husband and I took a trip to Peru several years ago. A native woman was weaving on a primitive backstrap loom, creating incredible patterns with vivid colors. Having grown up with an interest in art and all things creative, I was fascinated. I knew how to knit, crochet, embroider – but I was never exposed to weaving or even thought too much about how cloth was made. I returned home and decided to learn the craft.

In our modern, digital world of instant gratification and Amazon prime, I find purpose, peace and take great solace and in creating things slowly, and purposefully, honoring the craft tradition. Through the daily practice of weaving, I am forced to slow down, focusing on the moment, creating something from nothing. The art of handweaving is slow and methodical, my hands touch each piece of fiber as it is used and as such, each piece is completely unique. Weaving fascinates me. It gives me a sense of belonging, and makes me feel connected to a rich history of craftsmanship, honoring the skills that have been passed down through generations.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest struggle for me has been the lack of in-person opportunities for learning, due to COVID. Thankfully, because of the technological age we live in, I was able to connect with other weavers from around the world online and take courses virtually.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a weaver and I handweave modern, functional art and wearables. This includes everything from scarves and shawls, to tapestries, towels, table linens and blankets, I love connecting with my clients and creating unique and totally one of a kind pieces – whether it is for a specific wall in their home, a custom color scarf or a set of organic cotton towels for their kitchen. My largest tapestry to date was a custom 6ft tall modern weaving inspired by the Caribbean for a home in San Francisco…
