Rising Stars: Meet Imani Lewis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Imani Lewis.

Hi Imani, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
It first started with my love for reading. I have been in love with literature and storytelling since before I could even write. My mom would take my brother and I to the library religiously, you’d think that we lived there. We’d always check out physical books as well as audiobooks to listen to as we went to sleep. I knew I wanted to make people feel the same way books made me feel, so I decided to start writing my own.

Plus, I had stories in my head that I wanted told. I wrote hundreds of manuscripts but never finished them until 2019 when I discovered NanoWriMo. I was able to finish my first manuscript and release my debut novel, On A Cloudy Day (now titled “In the Clouds”). I then kept finishing manuscripts and releasing books, now here I am.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been the smoothest road. The hardest part of my writing journey started earlier this year when I first got pregnant with my second child. I was suffering in this pregnancy which took a toll on my physical and mental health.

I had no motivation and couldn’t get anything done. I had plans to release at least three books this year, but I just couldn’t bring myself to sit down and write.

When I’m motivated, it normally takes me a little over a month to write a full novel, but it’s taking me basically this whole year to just write one book and I only wrote that one due to having a deadline.

Now that I’ve had my son, my motivation and love for writing has come back tenfold, so I’m excited for you guys to read what I have coming up.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m someone who wears a lot of creative hats. I sing, write music, am a multi-award winning and national bestselling author, a graphic designer, and an entrepreneur.

I’m most known for my novels and children’s book, Hello & Goodnight.

I’m most proud of all the work I’ve released and published because that’s me sharing something I used to keep locked away and only for me as an outlet.

I think what sets me apart from others is that I’m not afraid of failure or putting myself out there. I don’t expect everything I publish to become a bestseller or even sell 10 copies. As long as I’m perfecting my craft, I’m happy.
