Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyla Nicole.
Hi Kyla, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
So my story begins at Spelman College in 2014. At Spelman, I entered as a Drama and Spanish major and didn’t really have any idea what I truly wanted to do. I thought that maybe I wanted to be a diplomat, but something about that career path just didn’t feel authentic to me. I was already bilingual before I started college so I was mainly focused on using my language skills to secure a job after graduation. Around sophomore year I was in the worst mental state of my life and I was thinking “ I have got to get out of here, I need a break from life and the USA (lol). So I decided to go back to the Dominican Republic for a semester to “study abroad” (haha air quotes because it was more fun than studying.
As soon as I got there I knew that this was easily the best decision I could have made for my life and what I now know, the path that would completely change the trajectory of my life. I remember thinking, yup! I have to stay over here for a year. I had goals to accomplish that I felt could only be done there. I was taking classes at a few different colleges there, but most importantly I secured an internship at a MLB academy as an English teacher. My time at the internship quickly helped me decide what I wanted to do. I set my sights on becoming a player agent for Dominican baseball players. By the time I returned to Spelman College senior year, I decided that I wanted to go to law school to become a Sports & Entertainment attorney but after studying for the LSAT, I quickly realized that was NOT for me. However, I did go on to accomplish my goal to become a player agent. That is a completely different story to how I reached that goal, but yes, my background is in sports. I enjoyed it, but I still felt like I was missing something.
If anyone knows anything about me, it’s that I really am passionate about helping others, especially women, work towards becoming the best version of themselves, so when the pandemic hit and I was no longer working in sports, I began to brainstorm a business idea that I could build while still helping others and incorporate my passion for beauty. In 2021 after having my own cosmetic surgery, I finally felt brave enough to break into the beauty and cosmetics industry! I’m a big believer in being the example before you attempt to lead someone, so I decided to get cosmetic surgery for me, but I was also thinking “ I’m going to be like Kylie Jenner. She got her lip fillers and turned it into an entire cosmetic empire with lip products, and I wanted to do the same with cosmetic surgery and aesthetics. Me getting the surgery was really the first step, I had a much bigger vision in mind. It took a full year to actually plan and execute but that’s how I birthed my business “Plastiques” Cosmetic Surgery and Aesthetic Consulting.
As I sit and think about it, being in the DR for that entire year was when I really started focusing on beauty and self-care. The culture in the country really focuses on looking your best and presenting your best self at all times. Also, cosmetic surgery is a HUGE industry there and I’ve always been drawn to it. It’s so interesting how everything comes full circle, I can not wait for the brand’s official launch this summer! (2022)
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The biggest obstacle I faced so far is just getting out of my own way. I had this idea for a business for so long, but I never knew how I was going to execute it. The worst thing anyone can do is not start. Once I realized this, I just jumped into starting this business and knew I could always work to perfect it later. Also, another challenge working in this industry is having tough skin. So many people will have negative things to say about cosmetic surgery, and just enhancing yourself in general. Many will project their own insecurities onto you, I had to learn how to let it roll off.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My business page, which originally was my surgery page grew quickly on Instagram because of my transparency and advice that I’ve given since the beginning. Like, I’ve said before, I LOVE helping people and building connections. People would always ask me where they could go to do certain procedures, what to wear during recovery and other questions that I knew I had the answer to. As I saw my platform grow to a global audience, I slowly started introducing my consulting services for cosmetic surgery, mainly focusing on medical tourism in the Dominican Republic and Colombia. I built trust by showing client transformations and reviews, but most importantly sharing valuable content about the cosmetic surgery and aesthetics industry and actually interacting with my audience. I remember being so determined to help people navigate their physical transformation easier I just had a hard time thinking of a business name, and with the help of a friend, I finally decided on one.
This is how Plastiques was born. Plastiques is a luxury cosmetic surgery and aesthetic consulting company that focuses on those that are looking for premium-level advising, services & products to achieve their body and beauty goals. My family has always joked about me being “high maintenance” so I wanted to create a brand that caters to those that want to invest in themselves. In the near future, in addition to virtual consulting services, I will offer digital products, premium recovery wear and luxurious beauty trips overseas. Upon the brand’s official launch (Summer of 2022), as far as the price point will range from accessible to higher end/ luxury. My services are an investment so some of the prices will reflect that.
What sets Plastiques apart is three things. First the top-tier “customized” services. The feedback from clients, I have over 200+ stateside and globally, has been incredible. I try to stay extremely organized and deliver services in a quick manner, and I am always there for them. They constantly say that I feel like their “ beauty bestie”. I work to provide them value and cater each service to their own individual needs. When I do their consultations or work 1:1 with them for a service I call Surgery Coaching, I make sure that we are planning for their journey in the best way for them, so that they can meet their goals. Secondly, Plastiques offers a surgery concierge service where clients can actually book me to travel with them overseas for surgery or any procedure to guide them through their journey. I am there to facilitate, translate and provide a luxury experience for them. I try to provide a girl’s trip vibe during this service. (I only travel to the Dominican Republic or Colombia currently, but will expand to Turkey and Mexico eventually) I know traveling overseas for surgery can be intimidating, but I am there to help. Lastly, the mission behind the brand. Although Plastiques is a company whose focus is enhancing the physical, I am also working to create a division of the business in the future that will focus on spiritual and mental health transformation. I want people to be happy inside and out, and I know women face so many struggles. I am working to create a nonprofit organization called “Annette’s Angels” dedicated to my mother, that will focus on helping victims of domestic violence and sex trafficking. I believe every brand should have a cause they are working to better, and working with victims of domestic violence victims and helping them is my passion. Plastiques is most definitely a brand aimed at the “it girl” and lovers of luxury and I am beyond excited to launch Summer of 2022.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Something surprising is the amount of confidence this business has given me. I was never an insecure person, but I think that my biggest boost of confidence has come from me getting out of my own head and underestimating myself. I love helping anyone that I encounter and I think I was super surprised how finding your passion and the thing that fulfills you can really boost your confidence.
Another thing that surprised me is the overwhelming amount of support I’ve received so far without even having officially launched! I am so incredibly grateful.
