Rising Stars: Meet Liz Sawyer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Liz Sawyer.

Hi Liz, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Crafting and creating is something I’ve always done since I was little. For years I worked as a creative director and even had my own surface pattern design business when my son was a baby. Cookies came about sort of by accident. I had baked and decorated cookies for personal events and the holidays. Then, in 2020 I had a neighbor ask for some decorated cookies for a photo shoot. Sawyer Sweets came about from that little spark of interest and soon other friends and neighbors were interested in placing orders.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
These cookies take a ton of work and sometimes you get burnt out – both creatively, like finding new ideas and creating designs, and physically. I’m lucky to be in a position of running my own business and that meaning I can run it as I really need to. It’s been tough to find a balance between wanting to make my own way, having a fulfilling creative outlet, and then still being a present and content mom and wife. I’m still working on the balance but I’ve learned when I need to back off, take less orders and charge my worth.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I create edible art: one-of-a-kind, custom-decorated cookies. I really pride myself on working with clients, creating designs that will celebrate their special events or parties and then bringing those designs to life on cookies with icing. I love that many of my customers have trust in my design and decorating abilities and we’re always able to work together to make a great product that makes them happy and sets their events apart. I pay extra attention the details. I’m always flattered that something I created has a part in their special occasions and memories.
