Rising Stars: Meet Patrick Rutledge

Today we’d like to introduce you to Patrick Rutledge.

Hi Patrick, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started making music after a man from my church gave me an old DAW. I used to play alongside him at church. He and the organ player were definitely mentors for me musically starting out. Being in church when I was young definitely taught me a lot of skills I carry today: knowing how to play instruments, hold a note, create harmonies, song structure, etc.

It’s been ten years since then. I spent a long time developing my sound and brand. I went through a lot of different styles of music before landing on this one. I felt it was best representative of all of the approaches I appreciate and represent me: the Alternative melodies, the lyrical Hip-Hop, and the Metal screaming.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My biggest struggle has been self-learning. We don’t have many (if any) examples of artists really creating sustainable careers, and so a lot of it is left to us to figure out and navigate. This is really difficult, especially when there’s so many things that play a role in your success as an artist. I’ve spent a LOT of time and money in learning things: what works and what doesn’t.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I fuse Alternative and Metal with Hip-Hop. My music as well as my visuals I think set me apart for better or worse. My music always has elements from other genres, naturally making it different. I have a background in filmmaking, so my visuals are, more times than not, narrative stories.
