Rising Stars: Meet Rylan Benèt

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rylan Benèt.

Hi Rylan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I design hyperpop digital art, discuss nostalgic trends on YouTube, some photography every full moon, and I lead a local artistic news source called, We Heart ATL Artists.

My passion for art and design are the source of my initial start. I grew up loving the arts, and drawing was my kryptonite. Now that drawing obsession has turned more digital. Zoom, zoom, zoom! Having access to the internet and consistently watching Power Puff Girls reruns had a huge impact on my style.

I started We Heart ATL Artists after living in New York for a bit. I love how connected and intertwined the art community is in NYC and I wanted to assist in bringing that energy to Atlanta. We Heart ATL Artists serves to inform local artists on art calls, jobs, news, and events.

My digital art was initiated by my previous role as a campaign manager. I would consistently design email campaigns and Facebook ads for clients. Designing campaigns for brands motivated me to continue designing for myself. Finally, I took my design experiments seriously in 2020 when I was in need of an outlet. My designs can be very bold, flashy, and hopefully trippy.

My YouTube channel explores nostalgia’s influence on current trends, events, fashion, and aesthetics. I just dropped a video on the scariest Disney Channel Original movies. You’ll look at Halloweentown with a different perspective.

I got where I am today by staying consistent and prioritizing my own goals. I find enjoyment in researching my next YouTube video, editing in Photoshop, and looking for art events. I prioritize these things in my free time and honestly, it’s true what they say. If you’re working on something that you’re passionate about, it will feel like you haven’t worked a day in your life. Along with being consistent, I think about growth and expanding. Growing my “brand” and expanding my offering. This is what led me to start my YouTube channel because I wanted to expand on my offering.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Definitely not a smooth road, it was more like driving down Dekalb Ave. Very bumpy, you may hit a pothole occasionally, but it’s worth it once you hit smooth pavement.

I still face a lot of challenges today, struggles with viewership growth for my channels or ensuring that the content I make is relatable. When I start to go down these dark rabbit holes, I try to remind myself to get back to work. Everyone goes through the same struggles when striving for success, but you won’t get anywhere sitting and thinking about it all day. Start producing at the rate that you can, whichever is easiest for you.

When I’m getting too distracted by the struggles, I just go back to the basics. This means for me to start photo editing or researching my next video topic. At least if I put my anxieties and worries into something productive, I can have a finished product later. Don’t forget to post it too. Everything has the capability of being content.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in graphic design, a majority of my skills trace back to me being an artist. I’m known for my design work on Instagram. A guy stopped me once at the Clermont rooftop and goes “you’re that girl that makes the crazy designs,” and I loved it. The designs I make can definitely be crazy.

It’s an amazing feeling to be recognized for art you produced. A lot of hours and finger power can go into a 7-second animation. To be honest I’m most proud of my work. I never thought I would consistently make art as a form of self-expression. I’ve always thought if I created any design work it would be mostly corporate shit.

What sets me apart is my art style. Every artist has their unique style they are known for, mine happens to be crazy lol.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I try not to look at life as having good or bad luck. Like any human being, I’ve had some periods of bad luck and some periods of good luck. When I’m going through either phase I just try to stay in the moment.

The only thing I can control is how I react to situations. As long as I stay focused on the task at hand, it should produce results gradually.

I aspire to have good luck all the time though! That sounds great but sometimes your most meaningful work is created when going through struggles and having bad luck.
