Today we’d like to introduce you to Serena Joyce.
Hi Serena, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, I’ve always known that I wanted to work in the arts and creative field. I wasn’t exactly sure what exactly I would do so I pursued a few different fields. In 2015 I went to Florida A&M University and majored in Fine Arts. There I met some friends who introduced me to a dance company called TranscenDance in Tallahassee. That was my first real dance experience and I was so scared because I didn’t really know much. The more classes and training I got, the more I fell in love with dance. After a year, in 2018, I ended up moving back home to Atlanta. I auditioned for the Groove 2 Musik company in January 2019. After training with them, I realized that dance was something I wanted to do as a career and made it my main focus point in life. I’ve been training hard for two years straight. Since then, I have been in multiple music videos, performed with multiple artists, and even got to perform on the Jimmy Fallon Show with 2Chainz. I’m just excited to see where this journey goes.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Overall, I would say it has been a smooth road because I get to do things that people train for years and years to do. But at the same time, I also work a day job and having to balance everything has been an adjustment. I’m usually so busy that I don’t really get much downtime. And financially having to pay for classes, gas to get to rehearsals, etc. has been tough but I know all this hard work would be worth it.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Aside from having a day job I’m a professional dancer and choreographer. I mostly specialize in hip hop and heels style of dance. I am proud for actually going after my dreams despite what anyone has had to say about it. I’m proud of being consistent even through the hard days and the days I wanted to give up. I feel like that’s what sets me aside from others. That consistency and discipline. Dance is literally my life.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My advice is for people to realize that they won’t become great overnight. Don’t be so tough on yourself because everyone’s journey is different. I also would suggest if anyone who wants to pursue dance to keep training. Keep being in classes and don’t leave the people you started out with behind.
