Today we’d like to introduce you to Terry Lawson.
Hi Terry, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve always had a passion for fashion. The desire came with the direction I saw fashion…particular trends. And the look was fine, but not for us all. I’m a fan of the classics. I’m all for trendy, but I feel like I wanted to provide a classic look that would sustain for a long time, just be trendy with the fit. So one day I began sketching. Had no equipment but had the looks I wanted. Reached out to get things done, learned more and more daily, acquired items myself, continued to cultivate my look, and we are here today. Everyday, I work on the quality of my look and what I want to continue to be. I think setting the bar to be here forever, even when I’ve transitioned, is the path. Creation is the key to all things, tho. So I’ll continue to do so.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I don’t think the words “smooth road” are ever applicable when it comes to business, lol.
When I started, I had nothing. Nothing. I literally started with sketches in a notepad. So first obstacle was no equipment. Then beginning late in the game. Getting your stuff done and the ability to present it to the mass. Self-doubt, you know. Multiple things can be a deterrent.
For me, though…it was a mind to persevere. I just HAD to do this. And not quit. Not fold. Not allow slow beginnings to wear on you. Staying the course.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a designer. I create looks for the classic individual. Looks that never go out of style. I most known for my Black Spartan logo and my classic City to Hood Line. It’s shirts that represent Cities, States, Local Schools, Neighborhoods, and even streets. Proudest of my line of high-end letterman jackets, known as the Cameron Ulrich collection(the middles names of my two sons) and just having the wherewithal to create and change my trajectory and that of those I love.
My logos, my custom fabrics, my classic looks, my ability to do proper blending of classics and trends. They set me apart. Especially in my attempt to build a sustainable fashion house. That’s what will keep us here for the next 100 years.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I’ve read many books on business and self-improvement. Branding, marketing, creating demand. I think it’s great to have people in place to do that for you, but even better if you have the knowledge to contribute to it. I watch motivational pages on YouTube, follow several pages on these subjects on Twitter & Instagram as well.
Also music. From Jay-Z to Nipsey Hussle… I love the guys that give you games.
