Rising Stars: Meet Theresa Mitchell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Theresa Mitchell.

Hi Theresa, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am CEO of Jhene’ Productions, founded on the understanding that black & brown stories matter. For years, we have been marginalized and silenced. The silence is now broken because Jhene Productions has been birthed. We are a team of minority women and men who are creating documentaries that highlight and give voice to the unheard black and brown voices. Our first film, Life After Loss shares the several intimate stories of black women and their journey to motherhood. We highlight specifically the black maternal health crisis in the United States of America and its impact of black & brown women. Started in the streets of New York City, filmmaker I saw a need to tell these stories because of her own journey to motherhood. After losing three children before her rainbow baby Jhene was born, Theresa knows firsthand the pain of not being heard, seen, and validated by healthcare professionals. I am requesting a few minutes of your time to seek resources and information on how I can show my documentary called Life After Loss.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
No, it has not been a smooth road, I wish it was. But for me been a black woman filmmaker, the challenges are, being overlooked for the quality of your work. If it’s too black or not enough. Another obstacle is funding it is a challenge to get funding for your work.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
For me, film-making gives you an opportunity to explore your creativity to the fullest. Most creative courses allow you to work in different areas and get to study the use of equipment. By exploring this element of my creativity, I will be able to innovate ways to shoot interesting films, even at a low budget. Every day is a challenge that requires me to think beyond my limitations and also loud me to discover the beauty of cinema. I will get the chance to discover how to employ techniques from the greats.
