Meet Michael Campbell of Satyr in downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Campbell.

Michael, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Satyr started as a bedroom project between two GSU students who were both really into post-hardcore and prog metal. Over the next year, while building a brand and a fan base, we went through several member changes, eventually settling into a solid lineup in September 2017.

We have one EP out on all major streaming platforms called “Neutrino!” and we are currently writing a full length which we hope to have out in late summer/early fall 2019. Our main influences include Dance Gavin Dance, Meshuggah, Intervals, Rush, Animals as Leaders, Chon, The Contortionist, Hail the Sun, etc.

We started out by over-saturating the Atlanta scene during 2017 and early 2018. We would play 2-5 shows a week just in the Atlanta area which was pure insanity. We definitely had no idea what we were doing, however, we have no regrets. We’ve met some people we are extremely close with now during that time, and we had a lot of success in building a fanbase and making connections.

We have toured quite a bit over the course of 2018, playing dozens of shows in Ft Lauderdale, New York City, Chicago, and tons of cities in between. We have the largest following right here in Atlanta, home to all of us.

Satyr has played with larger bands in the genre like Good Tiger, Strawberry Girls, Night Verses, Eidola, Megosh, Icarus the Owl, Tera Melos, and many more. We make friends easily and we love creating new music.

We have no plans of stopping any time soon and want to see this band take off. We work hard, we play hard, we love hard.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Changing members constantly during the first few months of the band was difficult and annoying to work around. Once we found a solidified lineup, everything really started moving for the band and we gained a lot of traction.

All of us are introverts which makes marketing rather difficult and foreign to us. The marketing aspect of being in a band is as important as making great music, in my opinion. However, none of that stuff comes easily to us, so learning to get better at it along the way has definitely been a huge challenge. It’s definitely fun though, and we are learning to love it.

Satyr – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Our band is known for tasty licks, tight jams, energetic live shows, and entertaining chicken related content. We are most proud of our music and we feel it brings a unique blend of several genres and styles together for one high-quality listening experience. All four of us come from varying musical backgrounds, while still sharing many common interests, which creates some interesting combinations of musical approaches.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Releasing our debut EP “Neutrino!” has definitely been the highlight so far. Many people have told us how much they love the music which is the whole reason we are doing this weird band in the first place. We only hope we can continue to provide that entertainment and enjoyment for more people with our next release.
