Today we’d like to introduce you to Sharrell McKnight.
Sharrell, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have always been the one that when going out, when planning an event, and or when being invited out with the girls I had to do the makeup. As a result, I’ve always enjoyed that aspect of it and so it just came natural to me. I then created a business out of something I was so passionate about. Years ago I was asked by a friend who is a stylist in Atlanta to come down and do a photo shoot with her. She emailed me the call sheet with some of the looks she was looking for and I was asked to be on set, ready and have the model done by a certain time. It was at that moment that it came to me that I should make a business out of it. My friends helped me come up with a name and that is where the name Beauty Basics by Sharrell came to life. I started doing makeup in my home and eventually purchased a small space in downtown Rome but I do travel throughout the metro Atlanta area as well.
Has it been a smooth road?
This has been an exciting journey for me. This is something I do when I’m not working full-time as a Program Administrator for a program that spans a 15 county region. Funny thing about it, I grew up in a home where my mom was a stylist and small business owner. My mom’s salon was built on our back porch so I was surrounded by women and makeup all the time. I’ve always been into makeup but I was always the one who shied away from it. Now I enjoy it so much and I’m very passionate about it. I’m coming from a crazy environment and background that wasn’t always stable growing up this became my out as I begin to mature and grow. I’ve met some wonderful people along the way I’ve created some wonderful relationships and I continue to look forward to what the future holds for me.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Beauty Basics by Sharrell story. Tell us more about the business.
My business is all things beauty. I specialize in hair and make up for bridal showers, weddings and wedding parties, headshots, professional photos, school pictures, etc. I’m also a Lash Extension Technician as well. I teach one on one, group and online classes. What makes my business different from others is I give you my undivided attention, I’m very personable, and I try to give the client as much education knowledge as possible. I want my clients to always leave me knowing that I have their best interest at heart and that I’ve given them a little bit of a nugget that they can carry with them from one day to the next.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I see the industry continuing to grow with individual specializing in so many different categories. I do believe that we are going to see a huge shift from trends to people focusing more on education, entrepreneurship, and certifications like never before. And it’s not going to be any particular person or gender is going to span a huge market for every individual and every demographic. I do see the industry trying to incorporate and focus more on the hustle and reinventing oneself to be more relevant. Teaching people more skill sets to help boost their bottom line is going to be the key to longevity.
