Meet Jalyn Hawkins

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jalyn Hawkins.

Jalyn, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I could never have imagined I’d be where I am as a DJ. DJ’s are the life of the party, without them, there is no party. I got started playing around with my older brother Devyn. He had Virtual DJ on his MacBook while he was in college and the software was pretty easy to use. When he would come home for breaks from school, I would get on his computer and mess around, this is when I began thinking I could actually pursue a career in this and here I am.

Trill Mil gave me the inspiration that I could be in the best. He’s really like an older brother as well. I watched him DJ a pool party when I was about twelve or thirteen years old and seeing how he used music to move the crowd was the coolest thing ever to me. I never told him this but without him, I would not be the DJ I am today. Eventually, I went on to DJ parties using just the MacBook. To get started, I tried to do every sweet sixteen, cookout, sports event, or function that I could. I would get great reviews from people in the crowd which served as nothing but motivation. I purchased my first board when I was about sixteen using the money I saved from all the events I had. Since then, it has been a nonstop journey. Now I’m in the best place for me. I’m looking for a consistent rotation in the city but I know my time will come. I have been nothing but patient this far and everything has been going pretty well.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has been pretty smooth for me so far, but there were some struggles along the way. At one point, I wanted to give it up altogether. I went through a period where I became very frustrated because it was hard for me to have consistent bookings. I was sick of just practicing and not being able to show off my skills. Once I changed my outlook, my bookings started to grow and I found myself performing more times a month.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I provide a good time. I specialize in providing the best experience at any party. I think I’m known for being a young DJ. I’m only 21 but I’ve DJ’d in 21 and older spots before. I always thought that was pretty cool because people really did not know how young I was. When I look at other DJs, I’m often impressed by what they are doing but I believe one thing that sets me apart is my music selection. I play things that most DJ’s would not play and I’m able to do that because of my music crates. Having a variety of music takes my talent to the next level. Big thanks for Mil for helping me get my music together. I went from being just a DJ in middle school with no experience to having t-shirts, business cards, and professional equipment.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I’m very proud of the DJ I have become. DJ’ing for James Harden is what I am most proud of. Being there would have been one experience but actually playing the music was something I could not wait to tell all of my friends and family about. James Harden is easily top 5 best players in the NBA and having the opportunity to DJ for him is something that I’ll never forget.
