Hi Jessica, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
The JessItDesign Shop has been a name for my crafts since a little girl. I have always been a craft lover, from school projects to DIY gifts for my loved ones. However, I stumbled on the business side during the pandemic. My husband and I were working on projects both inside and outside of our apartment. I noticed one particular afternoon; that the painters mistakenly got black paint on our expensive door hanger. I was saddened because this door hanger gave our door so much personality and style. From that moment, I headed to the store to create my very own door hanger. I was so proud of the hard work I put into the project and decided to post the finished product on my Facebook page. I wasn’t prepared for the amount of requests to order from me. I am now the owner of JessItDesign, LLC and I make custom unique door hangers for homes, classrooms, and offices! My signs and door hangers are inclusive, inviting, and impactful.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
For the most part, it has been a smooth road. It can be hard to juggle my full-time job as an elementary school counselor and the amount of custom orders. However, both jobs make me happy and are very rewarding. I pride myself on being a life-long learner. So, I am always researching the best products, methods and ways to conduct my new business! It hasn’t been easy transitioning from a hobby to a business but I have an awesome support system. I don’t have any entrepreneurs in my immediate family to show me the ropes but my family and friends are always willing to listen and offer advice on the way. I feel like this truly makes a difference.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in wooden door hangers. Each door hanger requires sanding, staining, painting, and bow making. I offer custom options that include different paint colors, welcome sayings in different languages, themes, and quotes! I love to see my artwork and designs throughout schools, homes, and offices. I will never forget one of my students asking me to help her create a door sign for her mom. She told me that she saw my signs around the school and that they were pretty. It was special to have a teachable moment with a student that ended with her feeling empowered and able to create meaningful work for her loved ones. Now, I can’t wait to sit down with you to design, create, and personalize your next door hanger.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I would say my husband deserves credit for the success in running JessItDesign Shop. He has helped me flip our office into the Design shop (a place for me to create and design). He continues to encourage and motivate me when I question myself and the ability to create. He supports me with deliveries, advertisements, and branding. Next, I have to give credit to my mother for our business check-ins. I’m blessed to be able bounce my design ideas off her. She gives me sound advice, direction for my business, and reminds me of my worth. Lastly, my customers are amazing. They feature my designs on their pages, leave reviews, share my work, pass out business cards and even step in for me at business expos. They go above and beyond for me and I have been able to build my clientele through them. My top supporters/ cheerleaders have to be my mother-love and my father! She never misses a post or design and he is constantly pushing me with encouragement.
