Today we’d like to introduce you to Jericha Moody.
Hi Jericha, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
It all started when a friend of mine asked me to model their hat line for a small impromptu shoot. Once they came to my house to get ready I quickly realized that I wasn’t going to be able to model for them. My head was too big to fit the hat, my outfit didn’t match the aesthetic, and overall I preferred to be behind the scenes of that particular shoot rather than in front of the camera. Luckily we had other models present and I had a vision for the shoot that I wanted to bring to life. My friends were totally understanding and let me creative direct and shoot the entire session on my iPhone. I had never done something like this before, but they took a chance on me and seemed to be impressed by my skills. After reviewing the footage, they convinced me to take creative directing and photography seriously. We were smack dab in the middle of a pandemic and I had a dying urge to tap into my creative side. Plus I needed some extra cash since I had lost my job due to Covid… so I picked up a camera and started shooting. I would find random places in the city that looked cool and harassed my friends to model for me. The rest was history.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Let’s start by saying I knew NOTHING about photography. I thought professional cameras were as easy as my iPhone, but I was terribly wrong. YouTube helped get me through most of my struggles learning how to use the equipment and understanding the science behind photography, but I still have a long way to go. I also knew nothing about starting my own business and managing my clients, but luckily I have some really amazing people booking with me and they made the process super easy and fun. I struggle with finding my flow, feeling confident behind the camera, taking “too many” pictures, lighting and having the correct settings when shooting in natural light, only having one lens. But it’s all a learning process and my friends have been super supportive, allowing me to use them as practice models. They also speak my name in rooms I haven’t entered which has given me a lot of new clients. I’d be nowhere without their support.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I used to work in hospitality for over ten years until Covid hit. Now I’ve shifting my focus to photography and creative directing. I love making my visions come to life. From styling, make-up, location, theme, all the way down to the picture edit. I also make videos for my shoots and eventually, I want to be a full-time videographer. That’s where the real fun is
