Today we’d like to introduce you to Ivy Cobb.
Hi Ivy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
When I was younger, my mother would always take me to get my hair silk pressed every two weeks, which in turn caused me to suffer from severe heat damage. In the seventh grade, I decided I wanted my hair back to it’s a natural state, even though everyone discouraged me from doing so. “Your hair isn’t curly. It’s kinky”, they would say, “It’s going to be happy.” Even so, I still wanted my hair back to its natural state, whether it was kinky, curly, coiled, etc.
When I started my natural hair journey, I had no idea what I was doing. I was never taught how to take care of my crown so I’d just wet it and gel it in a ponytail every morning; I didn’t even know to moisturize it. Eventually, I knew I was doing something wrong because my hair had started breaking off. So I started watching various YouTube videos, reading articles, ask others about natural hair care. Now, after four years, my heat damage is almost completely gone and I am so happy with myself. However the more I studied natural hair care, the more I realized that some of the most trusted products are either white-owned, have some type of chemical that isn’t healthy in the product, or both. From my concern spawned the idea to manufacture and sell my own natural hair care products. This way, people are putting products in their hair that are 100% healthy and they know they can trust it. I can’t wait to launch in April 2021!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Well, I don’t have any investors in my business, meaning I have to find the money myself. I’ve been trying to get jobs, but I haven’t had any luck in doing so. Also, I have very little knowledge of business so trying to figure out how to have affordable prices and turn a profit all while using quality ingredients was really tough, but I managed. There have also been a few naysayers, but I keeping tunnel vision.
