Conversations with Scottie Crews

Today we’d like to introduce you to Scottie Crews.

Scottie Crews is the son of the late great Ellen Crews and Sgt. Major Steve Crews Jr, aka “Cold Steele.” His mother worked in the fields as a sharecropper and enforced strong values such as GOD first, then family and the importance of education, while his father enforced values such as order and integrity. This powerful blend assisted with the development of this highly skilled author, photographer, philanthropist, and motivator. Scottie Crews started Scottie Crews Media after his mother passed away from her battle with breast cancer. It was then that he decided to showcase his talent of storytelling in the areas of publishing and photography. He donned the author name of G.S.CREWS and began to create exciting stories in the genres of Children’s Literature, Teen Fiction, Urban Drama, Fantasy/Science Fiction, and Action-Adventure.

All of his titles are available worldwide via Amazon and Barnes and Noble’s website. His most recent titles are STEM-related and designed to inspire young readers. These titles are Ellen E. Goes Fishing and Ellen E. Va De Pesca. The Adventures of Mercy Saint earned the prestigious Mom’s Choice Awards Silver Medal for Young Adult Fiction! The novel The Return of the Cowboy was the book of the month for Black Science Fiction Society in May of 2014. “I do this because my purpose in life is to create stories that entertain, educate, and inspire children, teenagers, and adults worldwide. Everyone has a story. I want to encourage people to tell their stories,“ Scottie Crews states. “ According to the Literacy Project Foundation (www.literacyprojectfoundation.org), 45 million people in the U.S are functionally illiterate and read below a 5th-grade level. My exciting and entertaining stories are part of the solution to this widespread epidemic.”

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. I have had to overcome the following challenges: Believing in myself. I have had to give myself a pep-rally plenty of times. In the past, I have been a victim of waiting for others to validate me. I have had to learn to be a self-motivator and encourage myself to propel me towards my goals. Making choices that I can live with. There have been times when my money has been funny because I made decisions that were not in my best interest. Now, I take in account risk and reward before I make certain decisions. Understanding my why. In the past, I have wanted to people to read a book or ask for a person to choose me to be their photographer of choice. Now that I understand my why I can articulate that to my clients and it makes it easier for them to understand how I can serve them.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in media such as publishing, photography, and videography (coming soon). I am most proud of how I help others capture memories and improve confidence through their smile or favorite pose. What sets me apart is I love meeting new people and helping them achieve their vision because my clients are family. It is a pleasure to work with them, to listen to them, and share the final product with them. It is all about them. It is all about their vision.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
GOD for setting the stage and providing the necessary resources for me to inspire others. HE is the master architect of my life. No matter how down I have gotten, HE has always uplifted me. HE is with me during the bad times and the good times. HE is ever-present and ever-ordering my steps. My family and friends have always been my first clients. They strengthened my confidence when it was weak. They believed in me when no one else did. Anyone I ever played basketball with at BONANZA, LEE STREET, or CLAYTON STATE UNIVERSITY. They all taught me that you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. When you are on the basketball court, you have to make your next move your best move.
