Today we’d like to introduce you to Mason Ward.
Mason, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I always grew up with an obsession for taking photos. Starting with disposable cameras all the way to the beginning of camera phones, I was always trying to use a camera. I would always bother my parents to use their phones to take pictures. Though always loved taking photos, I never really decided to pursue photography until I got into my college career. I decided to take my love for photos and use that and chose photography as a minor, so I could take my love and really dive into what was beneath the surface of it. Throughout my college career, I’ve really had the chance to dive into everything beneath the surface of “taking a photo.” I’ve learned about cameras, lighting, composition, and how to take all these things and create a photo I want, rather than just take a photo. At the moment, I am getting ready to graduate from college and focusing on building my photography business, Mason Ward Photography, and really finding my niche in the photography world.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Luckily it has been a pretty smooth road for me. I’ve had a wonderful support system behind me that has done nothing but encourage and help me pursue my dream of capturing moments of time with my camera. My wonderful partners Tony and Andrew always push me and do their best to encourage me in all of my artistic endeavors, and my best friends Grace and Ashley, who are photographers as well, help push me to grow and are always there to give me an unbiased eye on my photos. Thanks to these people in my life, I’ve been able to pursue this dream of mine and have been able to make great strides in my business and overall photographic skill.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
In my work, I tend to focus on portraiture, product, and fine art photography. I absolutely adore portraiture and being in college, it’s what I have been able to do the most of. I have done lots of graduate photos, headshots, and some fashion/lifestyle photos. I also love to attend conventions and do cosplay portraiture! Other than portraiture over the past year, I have really discovered the art of product photography and absolutely love doing it! I have had the wonderful opportunity to be a product photographer for Yim Creations, a small candle business, and I have learned so much in doing this! In doing these product photos, I’ve also discovered I really love using artificial light to really enhance these products and sculpt these photos in a way that I want and that I believe these superior products deserve. If I had to say what I’m known for it is probably Product photography or cosplay portraiture. I think in these two areas, I’m able to really apply my collected skills and create wonderful shots that both I am proud of and always please my clients. I think I’m most proud of adapting and finding ways to still pursue my art and my passion in this new world if COVID restrictions. I’ve been able to grow a lot in this time and continue to work on my skills while still working with clients safely!
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
To me what matters most in photography varies. In Product photography, I want to accentuate and show off these products. In these shots, the products are what matters most, so everything I do is to showcase the objects. In portraiture, what matters most to me is catching those moments that people will hold onto and appreciate for the rest of their life. Whether that be a striking shot during a graduate portrait session or really showcasing a cosplayers hardwork on the cosplay they are having me photograph. I guess you could say that what matters most to me is the details. I love capturing detail shots because to me, everything in life is made up of all the small details.
