Conversations with Karima Davis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karima Davis.

Hi Karima, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a devoted wife and mom of two beautiful daughters, ages 15 and 2, originally from Lakewood, New Jersey but raised in Atlanta, Georgia. In 2018 while I was carrying my 2nd child, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer and had to undergo chemotherapy. This gave me a sense of urgency to be very intentional about my health to prevent the generational health issues of cancer and high blood pressure in my family. Unfortunately, my health journey was put on hold due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. The world we once knew was changing and this was a big transition for me with not have the simple freedom to enjoy things such as fresh air and going to the gym. Being quarantined caused me to go into a deep depression and I gained all the weight back. I realized that the self-care of my emotional, spiritual and mental was vital. The world shutting down became a silence that later allowed me to self-reflect and rediscovery my purpose. I figured that this couldn’t be a battle that I alone was fighting and decided to use my social media platform to create positive content encouraging others to get through the pandemic as well. My thoughts became words, my words became affirmations and goals that I wrote in a notebook which lead to the actions that positively transformed me from the inside out. As a result, I transitioned to being vegan and have a consistent fitness life that contributed to my weight loss and positive mindset.

Starting at the early age of 15 years, I have spent over six years in youth and outreach ministry. My passion for people and to express the love of God lead me to found the nonprofit organization Building Our Sisters Mentality, Inc. in 2017. My organization advocates the growth and development of women and young girls dealing with everyday life challenges. I spent most of my childhood living in low community areas on the west side of Atlanta. As the founder, I encourage women and young girls, especially in low-income areas to focus on self-awareness such as mental and physical health, financial planning, entrepreneurship and the prevention of teen and adult domestic violence. My desire is to provide women and girls with the necessary tools and resources to be successful despite adversity. The positive impact is the reward for me.

I started my business Treasure You Inc. in Nov of 2020 while working a full-time job from home and transitioning to being a stay-at-home mom due to the covid19 pandemic. I had no business loans, grants nor received a stimulus check (it just never came). All I had was my faith, a vision, my own funds and a great friend, Rochelle mason, who’s an amazing business consultant and owner of The Accomplish Group consulting. Rochelle believed in my vision and pushed me to consistently pursue it. I decided to create a vision book, planner and self-care guide all in one that helps others to focus intentionally on every area of their life.

Treasure You Inc. creates stationary items and products that inspire women and girls to confidently discover their value and manifest their goals through purposeful planning and prioritizing. My goals is to empower them to overcome adversity and also provide the proper tools to be the best versions of themselves in every area of their life. I sold out of my vision books within a month along with a number of stationary items. My journey still continues and everyday I have the opportunity to positively inspire others. Six months planners and new products coming very soon.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. Social media is one of the biggest platforms for marketing and exposure. I constantly have to gain knowledge, resources and tools to help my business to be successful in this arena as well. I developed a new respect for content creators because it definitely isn’t easy putting yourself out there unaware of how you will be received. Working a 9-5, being a wife, mom and entrepreneur definitely has it’s challenges. Despite of new endeavors there is still an expectation to consistently play each role that you have in the life of those that you love. Being a planner at heart has helped me keep the balance.

One the hardest lessons was being rejected by those that you have supported. Community is so powerful and I think some of us have gotten away from that with a I will help you level up as long as it doesn’t surpass me. Fear of the unknown or our competitive mindset hinders us from completing embracing others and we limit the extinction of knowledge, resources and proper tools. Budgeting and research are vital when you are funding everything on your own. While there were SBA and stimulus checks being given to help the economic, I received neither. I was eligible for every single stimulus but didn’t receive neither of the three. I later just this month of April received a credit from the IRS. My business has been running off of strategic planning and pure faith.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I have been employed for eight years with the auto finance company Hyundai Capital American and have transition between my roles such as customer service, payment processing and service account finance specialist for lease and financed vehicles. I have ranked as top performer in every role due to my flexibility, my ability to retain knowledge and adapt to new processes and systems. I am grateful for the extensive knowledge and tools gained that will allow me to explore other career opportunities if I desired. What sets me apart from others is my curiosity to explore the why behind processes and procedures? The why is the in-depth details that give you clarity and allow you to be more self-sufficient, complete your tasks with efficiency and makes you asset.
