Hidden Gems: Meet Teresa Brooks of Reas Michel Styling Co

Today we’d like to introduce you to Teresa Brooks.

Hi Teresa, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I first started “styling,” I honestly didn’t even know that’s what I was doing. I would be in high school, always altering my uniform to fit the look I wanted to convey and then helping other students add accessories and changes to their outfits as well. I could never wear something just as it came, I always had to personalize it.

It wasn’t until my husband and I lived in Italy that I really understood what styling could be and the path I could travel exploring this side of the fashion industry. I had always wanted to be in fashion but because I didn’t major in any type of fashion design in college, I thought it wasn’t possible for me.

However, one summer, I came up with a simple business plan of how to brand myself as a personal stylist. I spoke to and studied other personal stylists to see how they achieved their goals, I took a few crash courses on the basics and really just took the leap! I really didn’t think people would take to my style of creating looks and allowing me to dress them so quickly! It took me by surprise but I’m more than grateful they’re willing to join me on my journey.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Good God, NO! It has in no way been smooth, especially since I didn’t even feel I knew what I was doing really. In the beginning, I was mostly just taking little parts of other people’s businesses that I liked and trying to incorporate them into one facet of a company.

I had to learn how to create a business plan, how to be a stylist, the types of questions to ask clients, whether to charge for a certain service, whether to offer free perks. Google was my best friend for a good minute! But with some help from my husband and my business coach (who doubled as my therapist) I began to see it was important to make my business stand out through what I had to offer, what 𝑜𝑛𝑙𝑦 I could offer. So that my clients knew when they were looking to add a new sexy feel to their wardrobe, they would know I was the stylist for them.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Reas Michel Styling Co?

My favorite apps to use for my business are: Photoshop (to create looks), Canva (for marketing purposes), InShot & Tik Tok (for creating fun fashion reels).

Books that I have found the most useful: Crushing It (by Gary Vaynerchuk, To Sell is Human (by Daniel Pink).

And while I don’t listen to many podcasts, I am always researching the next trend, what’s coming in and going out of style, so I’m always scouring the web. So some sites I have subscribed to that help to keep me abreast are: Fashionista Daily, Haarpers Bazar, Vogue, Council of Fashion Designers, Refinery29.
