Rising Stars: Meet DJ Nyquil

Today we’d like to introduce you to DJ Nyquil.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started doing in 2010 through my dance group, The Infamous Boyz Of Poison and our Sister Group, The Lovely Ladies of TorQue at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University. A lot of DJs played a lot of hood music and while that was fun, we were young men and women who wanted to dance at our parties. I asked our President if I could DJ a house party. He said yes, and we had an amazing time. Of course, me being someone with absolutely no experience, we thought it was just a fluke. So I got to DJ another party and again, it was amazing. So they told me that I should consider taking DJing seriously and here I am, 11 years later, as a full-time DJ.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Learning something new is never all that easy when you’re teaching yourself. I didn’t have a guide, or mentor, to show me the ropes. Everything I learned was trial and error. Granted, there were a lot of DJs I could have asked, but I’m more of a self-sufficient type of person. The biggest struggles I had were one getting out of my complacent mindset and getting stuck in Tallahassee. The next was moving to Atlanta when cover just shut nightlife down and grinding my way to getting gigs.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a DJ, I don’t consider myself just a DJ. I am an entertainer. I seek to provide an experience when I DJ. Rather it’s on an RnB night or a full-out party, I like to have fun. While I am a versatile DJ, my favorite music to DJ is RnB music. It’s refreshing to be able to play because 90% of the time all we do is turn up. What I’m most proud of is my energy and work ethic. What sets me apart from most DJs is I don’t DJ in a box. Meaning I don’t play the same 20 songs in a row and repeat them. I play a little bit of everything from old and new. I also typically don’t need a “host.” I usually talk on the mic and engage with the crowd myself. I also have two amazing Artists for whom I am the official DJ for by the names of Madam Dixie and Dubba AA. You can find them accordingly of IG @Addicted2Dixie and @DubbaAA. Honorable mentions to a few other artists I work with, This Is The Sound, Blue Montana, Miss Primrose, Teejay The Artist and AKT813.

What’s next?
I plan on opening a DJ academy soon. I also plan on traveling and DJing in other countries. Also whatever shows my Artists Madam Dixie and Dubba AA have for me, I will be there also.
