Today we’d like to introduce you to Bessie Lee-Cappell.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am one of seven siblings, the middle child. Born and raised by my maternal aunt and grandparents. When I was a child, I was told I was special, but I did not understand why people would say that. When I became a mother, I started to realize what they meant. When you become a mother, you began to see the world through a different lens. A lens that not everyone is previewed to. The more children you have, the less time you have for chores, the larger your tasks become and the greater the chaos becomes. For me, having my third child is what sparked my creativity. Needing items to deal with less frustration and better oral health for My infant (at the time) is what sparked the invention of my baby products.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth road? What is that!!!!??? In my life, the road has never been smooth. This journey, the entrepreneur journey. The mompreneur journey has yet to be smooth for me. Financial losses, inconsistent professionals, and a fight at the table for a seat in the baby product industry have been a rough road. However, it’s a road that I am willing to travel to reach my goals.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I currently possess a full-time position as a Licensed Social Worker for the City of Philadelphia. I love helping children and their families achieve success. Being a social worker is and will always be a passion of mine as I love to problem-solve. Which also mesh well with being an inventor!
I am most proud of seeing the smiles and hearing the laughter of my clients. I have the same satisfaction when customers contact me with photos of their babies smiling while utilizing my products. What sets me apart from others is that there’s only one me! Everything about me defines me. Not just my name, the color of my skin, my creativity, but everything that I am defines me. No one can own it, and no one can take it away.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Covid has taught me the importance of navigating social media for marketing purposes. Precovid I was attending expos as a means of marketing. Once everything began to shut down, I was concerned about marketing. I learned how to create Facebook ads and turn to social media for my marketing needs.
